And prayers and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions:
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) transmitted, in the context of the hadiths in the chapter on the command to maintain the prescribed prayers and the severe prohibition and stern warning against abandoning them:
"Narrated by Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Islam is based on five (pillars): testifying that there is no true god except Allah and that Muhammad (ﷺ) is His slave and Messenger; performing of Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat); the payment of Zakat; performing Hajj (pilgrimage) to the House [of Allah (Ka'bah)] ; and Saum (fasting) during the month of Ramadan.
Riyad as-Salihin 1075
Agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim"
.

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
The author al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) transmitted in his book *Riyad al-Salihin*, in the chapter on the virtue of the five prayers and the severe prohibition and stern warning against those who neglect them:
What Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) that he said:
Islam is based on (the following) five (principles): 1. To testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and Muhammad is Allah's Messenger (ﷺ).
Sahih al-Bukhari 8
This is the first,
and establishing the prayer وإقام الصلاة
this is the second,
And giving the alms
this is the third,
and the pilgrimage to the House.
this is the fourth,
And fasting Ramadan
this is the fifth. This is how Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) narrated it. In another wording, he placed fasting before the pilgrimage. Al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) based the arrangement of *Sahih al-Bukhari* on the first wording, starting with the pilgrimage before fasting. Most of the hadiths place fasting before the pilgrimage.
His saying (peace and blessings be upon him and his family):
Islam is built upon five: the testimony that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, the establishment of prayer, the giving of zakah, the fasting of Ramadan, and the pilgrimage to the House.
means that he likened Islam to a fortress with five pillars. This fortress is built upon them. It is known that the pillars are the foundation of the building, and if the pillars are missing, the building collapses and falls. If it is built without pillars, it is a weak building. But Islam is a strong, sound building, legislated by Allah (Mighty and Majestic) for His servants. He said:
This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion.
[Al-Ma'idah 5:3]
: These are the supports and these are the five pillars. He (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) explained them by saying:
to testify that None has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and Muhammad is His Apostle
Sahih al-Bukhari 2157
: meaning that you testify, acknowledging with your tongue and believing in your heart, that there is no true god worthy of worship except Allah. Everything worshipped besides Allah is false. There are people who worship the sun, people who worship the moon, people who worship al-Shi'ra, which is a star among the stars, people who worship trees, people who worship cows, and people who worship the private parts of women. Different nations, but who is the true god worthy of worship?
Allah (Mighty and Majestic). I testify that there is no god but Allah. I say this, acknowledging with my tongue and believing in my heart, that there is no true god worthy of worship except Allah. This is the requirement of the Shari'ah and the requirement of reason, because the one who deserves worship is the one who created the creation. And who created the creation?
Allah (Mighty and Majestic). Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) said:
Or were they created by nothing, or were they the creators [of themselves]?
[At-Tur 52:35]
And He (Exalted is He) said:
(58) Have you seen that which you emit? (59) Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator?
[Al-Waqi'ah 56:58-59]
If all the creation were to gather to create a single embryo, they would not be able to. Rather, He (Exalted is He) said, and listen to what He said: He said:
O people, an example is presented, so listen to it.
[Al-Hajj 22:73]
Allah has given us an example and commanded us to listen to it:
Indeed, those you [polytheists] call upon besides Allah
[Al-A'raf 7:194]
All those you call upon besides Allah,
will never create [as much as] a fly, even if they gathered together for that purpose
[Al-Hajj 22:73]
: Glory be to Allah!! All the objects of worship, in their various kinds:
will never create [as much as] a fly, even if they gathered together for that purpose
[Al-Hajj 22:73]
: If all the objects of worship other than the Lord (Mighty and Majestic) were to gather to create a fly, they would not be able to find a way to do so. This is regarding power. In the Shari'ah, Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) said:
Say, "If mankind and the jinn gathered in order to produce the like of this Qur'an, they could not produce the like of it قل لئن اجتمعت الإنس والجن على أن يأتوا بمثل هذا القرآن لا يأتون بمثله
[Al-Isra 17:88]
: Thus, no one is able to produce speech like the speech of Allah, nor to create like the creation of Allah.
And if you asked them, "Who created the heavens and earth?" they would surely say, "Allah."
[Luqman 31:25]
,
And if you asked them who created them, they would surely say, "Allah."
[Az-Zukhruf 43:87]
,
Say, "Who provides for you from the heaven and the earth? Or who controls hearing and sight and who brings the living out of the dead and brings the dead out of the living and who arranges [every] matter?" They will say, "Allah," so say, "Then will you not fear Him?"
[Yunus 10:31]
: Thus, the one described with these attributes is the one who deserves worship. Does a managed thing deserve worship?
The sun is managed.
And the sun runs [on course] toward its stopping point. That is the determination of the Exalted in Might, the Knowing.
[Ya-Sin 36:38]
Does it deserve to be worshipped?! Does the moon deserve to be worshipped?! Does a star deserve to be worshipped?! Does a tree deserve to be worshipped?!
No one deserves it. All of these are created beings. Ibrahim (peace be upon him) argued with his people. When night fell and it became dark, he saw a star. Some of his people worshipped stars. He said: "This is my Lord." Who said it? Ibrahim, to establish the argument against them. He said: "This is my Lord." The star moved as usual until it disappeared.
So when it set
: meaning it disappeared.
he said, "I like not those that disappear."
[Al-An'am 6:76]
, because the Lord does not disappear from His servants, and this one disappeared.
When he saw the moon rising
: and it is the brightest of the stars.
He said, "This is my Lord."
: because some of them worshipped the moon.
When it set
: meaning it disappeared.
he said, "Unless my Lord guides me, I will surely be among the people gone astray."
[Al-An'am 6:77]
: and this is stronger than the first. This one said, "I do not love that which sets," and this one said, "If I worshipped it, I would be misguided."
Unless my Lord guides me, I will surely be among the people gone astray." لئن لم يهدني ربي لأكونن من القوم الضالين
[Al-An'am 6:77]
. He came to something greater, which is the sun, and they also worshipped it.
And when he saw the sun rising, he said, "This is my lord; this is greater." But when it set
[Al-An'am 6:78]
: It set. Can it be a Lord when it disappears from its created being? Never.
When it set
: He (peace be upon him) declared tawhid (the oneness of Allah):
O my people, indeed I am free from what you associate with Allah. (79) Indeed, I have turned my face toward He who created the heavens and the earth, inclining toward truth, and I am not of those who associate others with Allah." يا قوم إني بريء مما تشركون * إني وجهت وجهي للذي فطر السماوات والأرض حنيفا وما أنا من المشركين
[Al-An'am 6:78-79]
.
Thus, "La ilaha illa Allah" means: "There is no true god worthy of worship except Allah, and everything worshipped besides Allah is false". The amazing thing, my brothers, is that these idols which are worshipped, the amazing thing is that on the Day of Resurrection they will be gathered and thrown into the Fire of Hell as pebbles are thrown, and so will their worshippers:
(98) Indeed, you [disbelievers] and what you worship other than Allah are the firewood of Hell. You will be coming to [enter] it. (99) Had these [false deities] been [actual] gods, they would not have come to it, but all are eternal therein.
[Al-Anbya 21:98-99]
: Correct. If these idols were truly gods, would they be thrown into the Fire?! No. But they were thrown into the Fire, so they do not deserve to be a god. Did it free itself to free others?! And so it is with those who worship them.
When this verse came, the polytheists wanted to liken it to themselves and said: "Well, what about 'Isa ibn Maryam? Who worships him? Who worships 'Isa? The Christians. Thus, he will be thrown into the Fire." So Allah (Exalted is He) revealed His saying:
(101) Indeed, those for whom the best [reward] has preceded from Us - they are from it far removed. (102) They will not hear its sound, while they are, in that which their souls desire, abiding eternally. (103) They will not be grieved by the greatest terror, and the angels will meet them, [saying], "This is your Day which you have been promised" - إن الذين سبقت لهم منا الحسنى أولئك عنها مُعبدون * لا يسمعون حسيسها وهم في ما اشتهت أنفسهم خالدون * لا يحزنهم الفزع الأكبر وتتلقاهم الملائكة هذا يومكم الذي كنتم توعدون
[Al-Anbya 21:101-103]
: And 'Isa ibn Maryam is among those for whom Allah has decreed good, because he is one of the resolute messengers.
And the important thing, my brothers, is that you know that everything worshipped besides Allah is false, whether it is a prophet, a wali (close friend of Allah), a righteous person, a scholar, or a leader. Everything worshipped besides Allah is false, and its worship is false. Who deserves worship?! Answer, my brothers!! Allah is the one who deserves worship, and everything else is false.
Thus, be careful with the testimony "La ilaha illa Allah." Well, the second is "and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah," and we will speak about it, if Allah wills, in the next lesson.
