Fatwa number ( 11110 )
Q: Is the good word one of the five foundations upon which Islam was built, did the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) teach us the mentioned word as we say it: (There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah) or did he teach us this way (There is no god but Allah)? And what has come regarding this in the Noble Qur'an and the books of authentic hadiths, and if it is in the Book of Allah, in which surah, and what is the number of the verse mentioned in that? And if it is in the approved books of hadith, on which page, and which section of hadith is it, and has the Muslim community been granted the right to add any word
or sentence to any Qur'anic verse or authentic hadith, even if that is good and pleasant, and what is the ruling of the Shari'ah in that?

And it answered as follows: A: The good word: (La ilaha illa Allah) is, as you mentioned in the question, one of the five foundations upon which Islam is built; indeed, it is the first of its pillars. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught us that good word and the rest of the five pillars in his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
Islam is based on five (pillars): testifying that there is no true god except Allah and that Muhammad (ﷺ) is His slave and Messenger; performing of Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat); the payment of Zakat; performing Hajj (pilgrimage) to the House [of Allah (Ka'bah)] ; and Saum (fasting) during the month of Ramadan.
Riyad as-Salihin 1075
It was narrated by Ahmad, al-Bukhari , Muslim , al-Nasa'i , and al-Tirmidhi from Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), and in his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
I was commanded to fight the people until they testify that there is no god but Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah, and when they say it, their blood and wealth are protected from me except by its right, and their account is with Allahأمرت أن أقاتل الناس حتى يشهدوا أن لا إله إلاَّ الله وأني رسول الله، فإذا قالوها عصموا مني دماءهم وأموالهم إلاَّ بحقها، وحسابهم على الله
Sunan al-Bayhaqi 10:368
It was narrated by the six. And in what was narrated by Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Mu'adh to Yemen , he said to him:
You will come to a people from the People of the Book, so let the first thing you call them to be the testimony that there is no god but Allahإنك تأتي قومًا من أهل الكتاب فليكن أول ما تدعوهم إليه شهادة أن لا إله إلاَّ الله
, and in another narration:
until they make Allah one, then if they obey you for that, inform them that Allah has made obligatory upon them five prayers in every day and night, then if they obey you for that, inform them that Allah has made obligatory upon them a charity to be taken from their rich and returned to their poor, then if they obey you for that, beware of the best of their wealth, and fear the supplication of the oppressed, for there is no barrier between it and Allahإلى أن يوحدوا الله فإن هم أطاعوك لذلك فأعلمهم أن الله افترض عليهم خمس صلوات في كل يوم وليلة، فإن هم أطاعوك لذلك فأعلمهم أن الله افترض عليهم صدقة تؤخذ من أغنيائهم فترد على فقرائهم، فإن هم أطاعوك لذلك فإياك وكرائم أموالهم، واتق دعوة المظلوم فإنه ليس بينها وبين الله حجاب

narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim . And Allah the Exalted has commanded us to obey Him and obey His Messenger Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) in everything he brought of legislation, Book and Sunnah, so He the Exalted said:
Say, "Obey Allah and the Messenger." But if they turn away - then indeed, Allah does not like the disbelievers.
[Ali 'Imran 3:32]
And He said:
He who obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allah
[An-Nisa 4:80]
And He said:
And whatever the Messenger has given you - take; and what he has forbidden you - refrain fromوَمَا آتَاكُمُ الرَّسُولُ فَخُذُوهُ وَمَا نَهَاكُمْ عَنْهُ فَانْتَهُوا
[Al-Hashr 59:7]
. And it is not permissible for the community to add a ruling or a word or a sentence or increase anything in the Book of Allah or the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), rather that is a religious innovation, and it is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
'A'isha reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: He who innovates things in our affairs for which there is no valid (reason) (commits sin) and these are to be rejected.
Sahih Muslim 1718a
, and in a narration:
He who did any act for which there is no sanction from our behalf, that is to be rejected.
Sahih Muslim 1718b
. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
