Explanation of the words of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said, in what he quoted from Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: You were— he said: "You are doing deeds that are finer in your eyes than hair, which we considered in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to be among the destructive sins"
Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) lived a long life and remained after the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for about ninety years. So matters changed in his time (may Allah be pleased with him), and people's conditions varied, and they became lax in some of the great matters, the great matters in the time of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them all), such as the congregational prayer. The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them all) did not have anyone miss it except a hypocrite or an excused sick person. But people became lax with it and were not on the level of the Companions in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). In fact, people in our time have become lax with the prayer itself, not just the congregational prayer. They do not pray, or they pray but neglect parts of it, or they delay the prayer from its time. All these are trivial matters in the eyes of some people, but in the time of the Companions, in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), they were among the destructive sins.
Likewise, deception in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He said
Whoever cheats, he is not one of us. من غش فليس منا
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1315Sahih (Darussalam)
But look at people today; you will find that deception is lighter for them than many other things. In fact, some of them, may Allah protect us, consider deception to be cleverness in buying and selling and contracts, and they see it as a matter of skill, intelligence, and cunning. We ask Allah for safety. Even though the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) disavowed the person who deceives people. That lying— lying is one of the great matters in the time of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them all); they considered it among the destructive sins. But for many people, they consider it a trivial matter. So you find him lying and not caring about the lying, even though the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said
and the person who keeps telling lies and endeavours to tell a lie is recorded as a liar with Allah لا يزال الرجل يكذب ويتحرى الكذب حتى يكتب عند الله كذابا
Sahih Muslim 2607c
And perhaps he lies in more dangerous matters, denying what he owes to people or claiming what is not his, and he sues them before the judge and swears an oath to it, so he becomes, may Allah protect us, one of those who meets Allah while He is angry with him. And so on, of the many matters that the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them all) considered among the destructive sins, among the things that lead to destruction. But people have changed, so they became finer in their eyes than hair. And that is because the stronger the faith, the greater the sin is in the person's heart, and the weaker the faith, the lighter the sin is in the person's heart, and he sees it as a trivial matter, being lax and lazy about the obligatory, and not caring, because his faith is weak. And success is from Allah.
