Explanation of the words of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) stated, as he quoted from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Hasten to righteous deeds
“Hasten” means to rush to them. And righteous deeds are every deed that a person performs sincerely for Allah, in accordance with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). This means that a righteous deed is built upon two things: sincerity to Allah and following the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). This is the realization of the testimony that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. A deed that is not sincere is not righteous. If a person stands to pray but shows off his prayer to people, his deed is not accepted, even if he fulfills the conditions, pillars, obligations, recommended practices, and tranquility of the prayer, and perfects it completely in appearance. It is not accepted from him because shirk (associating partners with Allah) has mixed with it. Whoever associates others with Allah in His worship, Allah does not accept his deed, as in the authentic hadith from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Almighty Allah says, 'I am the One Who is most free from want of partners.
Riyad as-Salihin 1616
This means that if anyone associates me with another, I am rich and do not need his association.
If anyone does anything in which he associates anyone else with Me, I shall abandon him with one whom he associates with Allah.
Sahih Muslim 2985

Likewise, if a person is sincere in his deed but commits a bid'ah (religious innovation) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not do, his deed is not accepted, even if he is sincere, even if he weeps from humility. That does not benefit him, because bid'ah, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) described it, is misguidance. He said:
every innovation is going astray, and every going astray is in the Fire
Sunan an-Nasa'i 1578Sahih (Darussalam)
So his statement (peace and blessings be upon him)
Hasten to righteous deeds
means that by righteous deeds, he means every deed that is sincere for Allah and correct according to the Shari'ah of Allah. This is the righteous deed.
Then he said:
Before the Hour there shall be Fitan like a portion of the dark night
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2197Hasan (Darussalam)
“We seek refuge in Allah from trials.”
There will be trials
This means that they will exist, and here it is complete: trials will exist like the dark patches of the night. This means they are pitch black and dark, where no light is seen, and may Allah protect us. A person does not know where to go; he is confused and does not know where the way out is. I ask Allah to protect me and you from trials.
Trials, and may Allah protect us, are of two types: trials of doubts and trials of desires. Trials of doubts are every trial based on ignorance. Among these are what happened with the people of innovation who innovated in their beliefs what is not from the Shari'ah of Allah, or the people of innovation who innovated in their words and actions what is not from the Shari'ah of Allah. A person may be tried, and may Allah protect us, and be led astray from the truth because of doubt.
Also among this is what happens in transactions regarding doubtful matters that are clear in the heart of the one who is certain but doubtful in the heart of the one who is astray, and may Allah protect us. You find him dealing in a way that is clearly forbidden, but because of the rust of sins on his heart—we ask Allah for safety—the matter becomes confused for him, and his evil deed is made attractive to him, and he thinks it is good.
And Allah said about these people:
Say, [O Muhammad], "Shall we [believers] inform you of the greatest losers as to [their] deeds? قل هل ننبئكم بالأخسرين أعمالا
[Al-Kahf 18:103]
Yes, we have informed you of the losers in deeds.
Say, [O Muhammad], "Shall we [believers] inform you of the greatest losers as to [their] deeds? قل هل ننبئكم بالأخسرين أعمالا
[Al-Kahf 18:103]
Who are they?
[They are] those whose effort is lost in worldly life, while they think that they are doing well in work." الذين ضل سعيهم في الحياة الدنيا وهم يحسبون أنهم يحسنون صنعا
[Al-Kahf 18:104]
These are the losers, and may Allah protect us.
So trials are of doubts, and they are also of desires, meaning that a person knows that this is forbidden, but because his soul calls him to it, he does not care and does the forbidden. He knows that this is obligatory, but because his soul calls him to laziness, he leaves this obligation. This is a trial of desire, meaning a trial of will.
And among this, indeed among the greatest of trials of desire, is zina (unlawful sexual intercourse) or liwat (sodomy), and may Allah protect us. This is among the most harmful things for this Ummah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
I have not left any trial more severe to men than women
Sahih al-Bukhari 5096
And he said:
Fear women, for the trial of the Children of Israel was in women.
And we have now, in our society, the Saudi society, those who call to this vice, and may Allah protect us, in twisted ways. They twist themselves with names that have no connection to what they say, but it is a means to what they want: the exposure of women’s coverings and their going out of their homes until they participate with men in their work, and evil and calamity occur. But we ask Allah to make their plots return to their own throats, and to empower our rulers against them by removing them from everything that is a cause of evil and corruption in this land. And we ask Allah, the Exalted and Sublime, to guide our rulers with a good inner circle that points them to good and encourages them to it.
The trial of the Children of Israel was in women, and it is the greatest trial. And there are people now who weave every kind of plot in order to destroy the dignity of women, in order to make them like images or dolls, mere desire and pleasure enjoyed by the wicked and the lowly of people. They look at her face all the time and every hour, and may Allah protect us. But by the power of Allah, the supplication of the Muslims will surround them and suppress them and turn them back on their heels in disappointment. And the Saudi woman, indeed the woman in every place of the lands of Islam, will be respected and protected where Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has placed her.
The important thing is that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) warned us of these trials: trials like the dark patches of the night.
A person may be a believer in the morning and a disbeliever in the evening.
We ask Allah for safety. Why?
and would sell his faith for worldly goods
Sahih Muslim 118
Do not think that the trifle of this world is only money. Every enjoyment of this world is a trifle. Every enjoyment of this world is a trifle, whether money, status, leadership, women, or otherwise. Everything in this world that is enjoyment is a trifle, as the Exalted said:
Some Muslims desire the commodities of this world, but Allah desires [for you] the Hereafter
[Al-Anfal 8:67]
So everything in this world is a trifle. These are the ones who are believers in the morning and disbelievers in the evening, or disbelievers in the morning and believers in the evening. All of them are selling their religion for a trifle of this world. We ask Allah to protect us and you from trials. Seek refuge, my brothers, from trials always. And how good is what our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us, where he said: When one of you testifies, meaning in prayer, when he testifies in the final tashahhud, let him say:
let him seek refuge with Allah from four things: From the torment of Hell, from the torment of the grave, from the trials of life and death, and from the Fitnah (tribulation) of Masihud-Dajjal.
Sunan Ibn Majah 909Sahih (Darussalam)
We ask Allah to make us and you firm with the firm word in this worldly life and in the Hereafter.
