The Meaning of "A Man May Be a Believer in the Morning and a Disbeliever in the Evening"

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The hadith of Abu Hurayrah says:
It is narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) observed: Be prompt in doing good deeds (before you are overtaken) by turbulence which would be like a part of the dark night. During (that stormy period) a man would be a Muslim in the morning and an unbeliever in the evening or he would be a believer in the evening and an unbeliever in the morning, and would sell his faith for worldly goods.
Sahih Muslim 118
What is the meaning of this hadith?

Answer:
He (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Be prompt in doing good deeds (before you are overtaken) by turbulence which would be like a part of the dark night
Sahih Muslim 118
He says: Hasten with righteous deeds, be quick to do them
turbulence which would be like a part of the dark nightفتنًا كقطع الليل المظلم
Sahih Muslim 118
, for there are trials in religion, trials in bodies, trials in wealth, and trials in society. A person should be cautious and hasten with deeds before being tried, before a trial occurs that stands between him and action
Be prompt in doing good deeds (before you are overtaken) by turbulence which would be like a part of the dark night
Sahih Muslim 118
due to their confusion, their multitude, and the bewilderment of the mind regarding them,
when a man will be a believer in the morning and an infidel in the evening, and a believer in the evening and an infidel in the morning, selling his religion for some worldly goodsيصبح الرجل فيها مؤمنًا ويمسي كافرًا، ويمسي مؤمنًا ويصبح كافرًا يبيع دينه بعرض من الدنيا
Mishkat al-Masabih 5383
; because of their confusion and lack of clarity; one may be a Muslim in the morning and a disbeliever in the evening, deluded by them, or be a Muslim in the evening and a disbeliever in the morning; because of their confusion and the abundance of evil in them.
And in the other wording:
Race to do works against seven. Are you waiting but for overwhelming poverty, or distracting richness, or debilitating illness, or babbling senility, or sudden death, or the Dajjal, so that hidden evil is what is awaited, or the Hour? The Hour is more calamitous and more bitter.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2306
So a person hastens with deeds and strives for good deeds; because he may be afflicted with something that prevents him, he may die, he may fall ill, he may be occupied, so if he intends to do a righteous deed, let him hasten. May Allah guide them all.
Q:
Fitan like a portion of the dark night
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2197Hasan (Darussalam)
In our time?
A: Because of their confusion in our time, before it, and after it.
Q: And
a man would be a Muslim in the morning and an unbeliever in the eveningيصبح الرجل مؤمنًا ويمسي كافرًا
Sahih Muslim 118
in our time?
A: He becomes an apostate, yes, because of their confusion. One person comes and says to him such and such, and he agrees with him in falsehood, in apostasy, and he becomes an apostate. Then one from the people of the Sunnah, the call, and good comes to him, and he becomes a Muslim; because of the confusion of matters.
