Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
It is established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) in a long hadith:
when a man will be a believer in the morning and an infidel in the evening, and a believer in the evening and an infidel in the morning, selling his religion for some worldly goodsيصبح الرجل مؤمنًا ويمسي كافرًا، ويمسي الرجل مؤمنًا ويصبح كافرًا، يبيع دينه بعرض من الدنيا قليل
Mishkat al-Masabih 5383
What is the meaning of disbelief in the hadith? And how does one sell his religion?

Answer:
It is established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
Be prompt in doing good deeds (before you are overtaken) by turbulence which would be like a part of the dark nightبادروا بالأعمال فتنًا كقطع الليل المظلم
Sahih Muslim 118
Hasten to do deeds, meaning: righteous deeds.
trials come like portions of a dark night when a man will be a believer in the morning and an infidel in the evening, and a believer in the evening and an infidel in the morning, selling his religion for some worldly goodsفتنًا كقطع الليل المظلم، يصبح الرجل فيها مسلمًا ويمسي كافرًا، ويمسي مؤمنًا، ويصبح كافرًا، يبيع دينه بعرض من الدنيا
Mishkat al-Masabih 5383
The meaning is that the state of being a stranger in Islam becomes severe until the believer becomes a Muslim, then becomes a disbeliever in the evening, and conversely, he becomes a believer in the evening and a disbeliever in the morning, selling his religion for a trifle of this world. This happens when he speaks of disbelief or acts upon it for the sake of this world. He may be a believer in the morning, and someone comes to him saying: “Cursing Allah, cursing the Messenger, abandoning prayer, and we will give you so much and so much; you will make zina lawful, you will make intoxicants lawful, and we will give you so much and so much.” So he sells his religion for a trifle of this world, and becomes a disbeliever in the morning or in the evening. Or they may say: “Do not be with the believers, and we will give you so much and so much to be with the disbelievers.” They entice him to be with the disbelievers, in the party of the disbelievers, and among their supporters, until they give him a great amount of wealth, so he becomes a close friend of the disbelievers and an enemy of the believers.
The types of apostasy are very numerous, and it is mostly due to this world, the love of this world and preferring it over the Hereafter. For this reason, he said:
and would sell his faith for worldly goodsيبيع دينه بعرض من الدنيا
Sahih Muslim 118
, and in another wording:
Hasten to do righteous deeds. Do you wait for nothing but poverty that is forgotten, or wealth that makes arrogant, or death that is prepared, or an illness that ruins, or old age that weakens, or the Dajjal, for the Dajjal is the worst of the absent ones to be awaited, or the Hour, for the Hour is more severe and more terribleبادروا بالأعمال الصالحة، هل تنتظرون إلا فقرًا منسيًا أو غنى مطغيًا، أو موتًا مجهزًا، أو مرضًا مفسدًا، أو هرمًا مفنّدًا، أو الدجال، فالدجال شر غائب ينتظر، أو الساعة فالساعة أدهى وأمر
.
The believer hastens to do deeds, fearing that he may be tested with sudden death, death by surprise. He may be tested with an illness that ruins his strength so he cannot work. He may be tested with old age, tested with other things. A person must seize his life, health, and intellect with righteous deeds before he is prevented from doing so, sometimes by causes he is tested with, such as illness and others, and sometimes by greed for this world, the love of this world, preferring it over the Hereafter, and its beautification by the enemies of Allah and the callers to disbelief and misguidance.
