The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The discussion has already covered the beginning of the second verse mentioned by the author (may Allah have mercy on him) in the chapter on hastening to do good, which is the saying of Allah the Exalted:[Ali 'Imran 3:133-134] Allah the Exalted said: [Ali 'Imran 3:134] The love of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) for the servant is the ultimate goal of every person. Every believing person’s ultimate goal is that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) loves him, and this is the purpose of every believer, by the saying of Allah the Exalted: [Ali 'Imran 3:31] He did not say, "Follow me and be truthful in what you say," but rather He shifted to saying, "Allah loves you," because the whole matter is that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) loves you. I ask Allah to make me and you among His beloved.
As for the doers of good in our phrase "the doers of good," the intended meaning is those who are good in their worship of Allah and those who are good to the servants of Allah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) clarified their rank in his statement when Jibril asked him about ihsan (excellence in worship), saying:Sahih al-Bukhari 50 This rank is lower than the first rank. The first rank is to worship Allah seeking His pleasure, with love and longing, and the second is to worship Him fleeing from His punishment, in fear and awe.
As for being good to the servants of Allah, it is to treat them with the best in speech, actions, giving, withholding harm, and so on. Even in speech, treat them with the best. Allah the Exalted said:[An-Nisa 4:86] This means that if you do not do that, then at least greet them with something better than that, or at the very least return it. For this reason, many scholars said that if a Muslim says, "Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah," you should say, "Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah." This is the minimum. If you add "and His blessings," it is better, because Allah said: He began with the best, then said: Similarly, if a person greets you with a clear, distinct voice, return it to him with a clear, distinct voice, at the very least. Many people, or some people, when you greet them, return the greeting with their nose, so that you can barely hear them in their return greeting. This is wrong, because it is contrary to how they greeted you. They greet you with a clear voice, and then you return it with your nose. This is contrary to what Allah commanded.
Similarly, being good in action is like helping people and assisting them in their affairs. Whenever you help a person, you have been good to them. Helping with money, charity, gifts, giving, and the like is part of ihsan. It is also part of ihsan that if you see your brother in a sin, you clarify it to him and forbid him from it, because this is among the greatest forms of being good to him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If you prevent him from injustice, you have helped him and been good to him. The important thing is that you should keep this verse in mind in your dealings with people: [Ali 'Imran 3:134] Be good to them to the extent of your ability. [Ali 'Imran 3:135] If they commit a grave sin, a grave sin is what is considered shameful among sins, and they are the major sins, such as zina (unlawful sexual intercourse), drinking intoxicants, killing a soul, and the like. Everything that is considered shameful is a grave sin. Or if they wrong themselves with sins less than a grave sin, i.e., minor sins, they should remember Allah. That is, they should remember His greatness and His punishment, and they should also remember His mercy, His acceptance of repentance, and His reward. So they remember Allah from two aspects.
The first aspect is in terms of His greatness, punishment, and great power, so they become awestruck, feel ashamed, and seek forgiveness.
The second aspect is in terms of His mercy and acceptance of repentance, so they desire repentance and seek Allah’s forgiveness. For this reason, He said:[Ali 'Imran 3:135] And among the best things with which to seek forgiveness is the master of seeking forgiveness: "O Allah, You are my Lord, there is no deity except You. You created me and I am Your servant. I am upon Your covenant and Your promise as much as I am able. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge to You Your blessing upon me and I acknowledge my sin. So forgive me, for indeed there is no one who forgives sins except You."
Allah the Exalted said:[Ali 'Imran 3:135] But we ask Allah for forgiveness for us and for our brothers who preceded us in faith. As for it being in our hands to forgive, no, no one forgives sins except Allah. Allah the Exalted said: [Ali 'Imran 3:135] This means they did not persist in their sins and their wrongdoing while knowing that they were sins and wrongdoing.
And in this is evidence that persisting in sin with knowledge is a grave matter, even in the case of minor sins. For this reason, many scholars held the view that if a person persists in a sin, even if it is minor, the minor sin becomes a major one. Among this is what ignorant people do today regarding shaving the beard. You find them shaving their beards and persisting in it, and they do not see it as anything but adornment and beauty. The truth is that it is ugliness and that it is a defect, because everything that results from disobedience has no good in it; rather, it is ugliness. These people who persist in this sin, even though it is minor, it becomes a major one through their persistence, may Allah protect us from that. Because a person does not care; he does it, and you find that every day, whenever he wants to go out to the market or to his work, he goes and looks in the mirror. If he finds one hair that has grown out, it goes to the razor or to being shaved. We ask Allah for safety. This is undoubtedly a sin against the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and a person should fear that Satan will lead him gradually with this sin to greater and more major sins. Allah the Exalted said:[Ali 'Imran 3:135-136] O Allah, make us among these workers, and make our reward that, O Lord of the worlds.
The discussion has already covered the beginning of the second verse mentioned by the author (may Allah have mercy on him) in the chapter on hastening to do good, which is the saying of Allah the Exalted:
(133) And hasten to forgiveness from your Lord and a garden as wide as the heavens and earth, prepared for the righteous (134) Who spend [in the cause of Allah] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people
وسارعوا إلى مغفرة من ربكم وجنة عرضها السماوات والأرض أعدت للمتقين الذين ينفقون في السراء والضراء والكاظمين الغيظ والعافين عن الناسand Allah loves the doers of good;
والله يحب المحسنينSay, [O Muhammad], "If you should love Allah, then follow me, [so] Allah will love you
قل إن كنتم تحبون الله فاتبعوني يحببكم اللهAs for the doers of good in our phrase "the doers of good," the intended meaning is those who are good in their worship of Allah and those who are good to the servants of Allah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) clarified their rank in his statement when Jibril asked him about ihsan (excellence in worship), saying:
To worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you cannot achieve this state of devotion then you must consider that He is looking at you.
أن تعبد الله كأنك تراه فإن لم تكن تراه فإنه يراكAs for being good to the servants of Allah, it is to treat them with the best in speech, actions, giving, withholding harm, and so on. Even in speech, treat them with the best. Allah the Exalted said:
