He said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I was absent from the first battle in which you fought the polytheists'"

The reciter: "By Allah, if He allows me to witness a battle against the polytheists, He will see what I do. When the Day of Uhud came and the Muslims were routed, he said: 'O Allah, I seek Your pardon for what these people have done'—meaning his companions—'and I disavow You of what these people have done'—meaning the polytheists. Then he advanced, and Sa'd ibn Mu'adh met him. He said: 'O Sa'd ibn Mu'adh, Paradise, by the Lord of the Ka'bah! I smell its fragrance from beyond Uhud.' Sa'd said: 'What could I do, O Messenger of Allah, about what he did?' Anas said: 'We found eighty wounds on him, from sword cuts, spear thrusts, or arrow shots. We found that he had been killed and mutilated by the polytheists, and no one recognized him except his sister by his fingernails. Anas said: 'We thought or believed that this verse was revealed concerning him and those like him[Al-Ahzab 33:23] to the end of it. Agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim"
