Explanation of the words of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) stated, in what he quoted from Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The Muslim, trustworthy storekeeper who carries out what he is ordered to do, giving it in full and generously, with a willing heart, to the one for whom it is ordered, is one of the charitable. الخازم المسلم الأمين الذي ينفذ ما أمر به فيعطيه لمن أمر له به كاملًا موفرًا طيبة به نفسه أحد المتصدقين
The word “storekeeper” is the subject, and “one of the charitable” is its predicate. This means that the storekeeper who possesses these three descriptions: the Muslim, the trustworthy one, and the one who carries out what he is ordered to do. He is Muslim, as a precaution against the disbeliever. So if the storekeeper is a disbeliever, even if he is trustworthy and carries out what he is ordered to do, he has no reward, because disbelievers have no reward in the Hereafter for the good they do. Allah the Exalted said:
And We will regard what they have done of deeds and make them as dust dispersed. وَقَدِمْنَا إِلَى مَا عَمِلُوا مِنْ عَمَلٍ فَجَعَلْنَاهُ هَبَاءً مَنْثُوراً
[Al-Furqan 25:23]
And He the Exalted said:
And whoever of you reverts from his religion [to disbelief] and dies while he is a disbeliever - for those, their deeds have become worthless in this world and the Hereafter, and those are the companions of the Fire, they will abide therein eternally.
[Al-Baqarah 2:217]
However, if he does good and then embraces Islam, he will be safe regarding the good he did previously, and he will be given his reward. The Muslim storekeeper. The second description: the trustworthy one, meaning the one who fulfilled the trust placed in him, preserving the wealth, not corrupting it, not being negligent with it, and not transgressing in it. The third description: the one who carries out what he is ordered to do, meaning he acts, because some people are trustworthy but lazy. So this one is trustworthy and acts, combining strength and trustworthiness. This also contains a fourth description: that he should be willing in his heart. If he carries out and gives what he is ordered to give, he gives it with a willing heart. He gives it with a willing heart, meaning he does not boast to the recipient or show that he has a favor over him, but he gives it willingly from his heart. This makes him one of the charitable, even though he did not pay a single coin from his own wealth. An example of this is a man who has wealth, and the treasurer of the money box is a Muslim, trustworthy, who carries out what he is ordered to do, and gives it to its owner with a willing heart. So if the owner of the box says to him: “O so-and-so, give this poor man ten thousand riyals,” and he gives it in the manner described by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), then he is like the one who gave charity of ten thousand riyals, without anything being deducted from the reward of the one who gave charity. But this is a favor from Allah (Mighty and Majestic). So in this hadith is evidence of the virtue of trustworthiness, and the virtue of carrying out what one is entrusted with and not being negligent in it. And it is evidence that cooperation in righteousness and piety is recorded for the one who assists just as it is recorded for the one who acts. And this is the favor of Allah, which He grants to whom He wills. And success is from Allah.
