Explanation of the statement of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "... And Allah the Exalted said: ((And lower your wing to the believers)) ..."

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Satan comes to a person and says to him, "How can you be humble toward this poor man? How can you be humble toward this young man? How can you speak to so-and-so? How can you speak to so-and-so?" But whoever is humble before Allah, Allah (Mighty and Majestic) will raise him, even if he is high in status, as long as he is a believer. However, if he is a disbeliever, it is not permissible for a person to lower his wing to him. But he must submit to the truth by inviting him to the religion. He should not disdain him or be arrogant and refuse to invite him. Rather, he should invite him, but with dignity and honor, without insulting him. This is the meaning of His saying:
And lower your wing to the believers واخفض جناحك للمؤمنين
[Al-Hijr 15:88]
, and in the second verse:
And lower your wing to those who follow you of the believers. واخفض جناحك لمن اتبعك من المؤمنين
[Ash-Shu'ara 26:215]
. This is the duty of the Muslim toward his brothers: to be soft and gentle in word and deed, because this is what necessitates affection and love among people. And this—meaning affection and love—is a requirement of the Shari'ah. For this reason, the Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade everything that leads to enmity and hatred, such as bidding against the bid of a Muslim, or offering a price against the offer of a Muslim, and other things that are well known to many people. And success is from Allah.
The reader: He said (may Allah have mercy on him): "The chapter on honoring the sanctities of Muslims, explaining their rights, and showing compassion and mercy to them:
Allah the Exalted said:
whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land - it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one - it is as if he had saved mankind entirely
[Al-Ma'idah 5:32]
