Explanation of the words of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : As for the third verse, it is the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And lower your wing to the believers
[Al-Hijr 15:88]
And in the second verse:
to those who follow you of the believers.
[Ash-Shu'ara 26:215]
The meaning is: be humble toward them and be gentle with them in speech and action, because a believer is merciful and compassionate toward his brother, as Allah the Exalted said in describing the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and those with him:
forceful against the disbelievers, merciful among themselves
[Al-Fath 48:29]
And in His saying:
And lower your wing to the believers
[Al-Hijr 15:88]
there is evidence that a person is commanded to be humble toward his brothers, even if he is of high status. Just as a bird rises with its wing, so if a person is of high status, let him lower his wing, let him be humble, and let him be modest toward his brothers. And let him know that whoever is humble for the sake of Allah, Allah the Mighty and Majestic will raise him. A person might say, "If I am humble toward the poor man and speak to the poor man, or if I am humble toward the young one or speak to him, or something like that, perhaps this is a lowering of myself and a reduction of my rank." But this is from the whispers of Satan. Satan enters into a person in everything, as Allah the Exalted said about him that he said:
(16) [Satan] said, "Because You have put me in error, I will surely sit in wait for them on Your straight path. (17) Then I will come to them from before them and from behind them and on their right and on their left, and You will not find most of them grateful [to You]."
[Al-A'raf 7:16-17]
So Satan comes to a person and says to him: How can you be humble toward this poor man? How can you be humble toward this young man? How can you speak to so-and-so? How can you speak to so-and-so? But whoever is humble for the sake of Allah, Allah the Mighty and Majestic will raise him, even if he is a scholar, as long as he is a believer. However, if he is a disbeliever, it is not permissible for a person to lower his wing to him, but he must submit to the truth by calling him to the religion.
