The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
He (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “Chapter on the recommendation of pleasant speech and a cheerful countenance when meeting people:
Allah the Exalted said:
And lower your wing to the believers
[Al-Hijr 15:88]
.
And He the Exalted said:
And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you.
[Ali 'Imran 3:159]
.
And as for the hadiths: It was narrated from 'Adi ibn Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Protect yourselves against Fire even if it is with half a date, and he who does not find it, (he should do so) with pleasant words.
Sahih Muslim 1016c

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said in the book *Riyad al-Saliheen*: “Chapter on the recommendation of a cheerful countenance” : meaning when meeting, when a person meets his brother, he should meet him with cheerfulness, a cheerful countenance, and good speech, because this is part of the character of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), and this is not considered a lowering of the person, but rather an elevation for the person and a reward for him with Allah (Mighty and Majestic), and following the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was always cheerful and frequently smiled, may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him.
So a person should meet his brother with a cheerful countenance and a pleasant word, so that he may thereby attain reward, love, affection, and distance from arrogance and haughtiness toward the servants of Allah.
Then the author mentioned verses, among which is the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And lower your wing to the believers
[Al-Hijr 15:88]
. “Lower your wing”: means to lower oneself and be humble toward the believers, because the believer is worthy of humility toward him, as for the disbelievers, Allah the Exalted said:
O Prophet, fight against the disbelievers and the hypocrites and be harsh upon them. And their refuge is Hell, and wretched is the destination.
[At-Tawbah 9:73]
, but the one who is received with cheerfulness and a cheerful countenance is the believer, as for the disbeliever, if his Islam is hoped for, if we treat him with a cheerful countenance and cheerfulness, then we treat him with that hoping for his Islam and his benefit from this meeting, but if this humility and cheerful countenance only increases his arrogance over the Muslim and haughtiness toward him, then he is not met with that, and moreover, a cheerful countenance causes joy for its owner, because it distinguishes between a person who meets you with a frowning face and a person who meets you with a cheerful face.
