Continuation of the explanation of the statement of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "."

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : The discussion concerns the first hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding the bond between a Muslim and his brother, and that a Muslim is the brother of a Muslim. We have reached his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
The piety is here, (and while saying so) he pointed towards his chest
Sahih Muslim 2564a
: This means that piety is in the heart. If the heart fears Allah, the limbs fear Him; and if the heart does not fear Allah, the limbs do not fear Him. This is like his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
Beware! There is a piece of flesh in the body if it becomes good (reformed) the whole body becomes good but if it gets spoilt the whole body gets spoilt and that is the heart.
Sahih al-Bukhari 52
. If there is piety to Allah (Mighty and Majestic) in a person's heart, along with fear of Him and awe of Him, his outward deeds will be upright, because outward deeds follow the heart.
Some scholars, including Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), likened the heart to an obeyed king with his soldiers. If the obeyed king with his soldiers orders his soldiers to do something, they obey him. However, some scholars said: This analogy is less than the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
if it becomes good (reformed) the whole body becomes good
Sahih al-Bukhari 52
. This is because, although the king with his soldiers is obeyed, they do not become righteous because of his righteousness. But if the heart becomes righteous, the body becomes righteous, and if it fears Allah, the body fears Allah.
Know that some people argue falsely with this hadith. If you order them to do what is right, or forbid them from doing what is wrong, they say, "Piety is here." You say to them: Do not shave your beard. Shaving the beard is forbidden. Shaving the beard is from the way of the Zoroastrians and the polytheists. Letting the beard grow is from the way of the Prophets, the Messengers, and the righteous awliya (close friends of Allah). If you say this to him, he says: "Piety is here. Piety is here." We say to him: You have lied. There is no piety in your heart. If there were piety in your heart, you would have feared Allah. Because if the heart fears Allah, the limbs fear Him, and if it plunges into the disobedience of Allah, the limbs plunge into it.
And in his saying:
Piety is here, and his pointing is to his chest
: This is evidence that the intellect is in the heart which is in the chest. This is exactly in accordance with the Qur'an. Allah the Exalted said:
So have they not traveled through the earth and have hearts by which to reason and ears by which to hear? For indeed, it is not eyes that are blinded, but blinded are the hearts which are within the breasts.
[Al-Hajj 22:46]
, then He said:
hearts by which to reason
[Al-Hajj 22:46]
then He said:
but blinded are the hearts which are within the breasts.
[Al-Hajj 22:46]
.
The heart is not the brain, as some ignorant people think. The intellect is in the heart, but the brain undoubtedly has an effect on the servant's deeds, in his movements and in his stillness. However, they said: The brain is like a servant; it prepares things and cooks them, then sends them to the heart. Then the heart issues orders to the brain so that the brain manages the nerves and the rest of the body. Thus, this brain is a servant to the heart when sending things to it and receiving them from it. Things pass from the heart going and coming to the brain, and the brain is what moves the body. Therefore, if the brain is disturbed, everything is disturbed.
He said:
It is a serious evil for a Muslim that he should look down upon his brother Muslim
Sahih Muslim 2564a
In this is a great warning against looking down upon your Muslim brother, and that it is obligatory for you to respect him and honor him for what he has of Islam and faith.
Then he said:
The whole of the Muslim is sacred to his fellow Muslim, his blood, his wealth and his honor.
Sunan Ibn Majah 3933Sahih (Darussalam)
,
The whole of the Muslim is sacred to his fellow Muslim, his blood
Sunan Ibn Majah 3933Sahih (Darussalam)
: So he does not transgress against himself by killing or wounding or otherwise
and his wealth وماله
: So he does not take his wealth, not by force, not by theft, not by betrayal, not by claiming what is not his, nor otherwise. By any path you take your brother's wealth without right, it is forbidden for you.
and his honor وعرضه
: That you do not violate his honor, and speak about him among people, whether you are truthful in what you say or lying. Because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
When he was asked about backbiting, he said: "It is mentioning your brother in a way that he would dislike." They said: "O Messenger of Allah, what if what I say about my brother is true?" He said: "If what you say is in him, you have backbitten him; and if what you say is not in him, you have slandered him."
. So it is obligatory for the Muslim to respect his brother in his wealth, his honor, and his blood:
The whole of the Muslim is sacred to his fellow Muslim, his blood, his wealth and his honor.
Sunan Ibn Majah 3933Sahih (Darussalam)
, and Allah knows best.
