Explanation of the statement of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) in what he quoted: "

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said, in what he quoted from Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
None of you will have faith till he wishes for his (Muslim) brother what he likes for himself.
Sahih al-Bukhari 13
,
None of you truly believes
: This means that one does not become a true believer with complete faith except with this condition: that he loves for his brother what he loves for himself of good, and what he loves for himself of leaving evil. This means he also dislikes for his brother what he dislikes for himself. This is the true believer. And if a person treats his brothers in this manner, he cannot cheat them, betray them, lie to them, or encroach upon them, just as he does not like such things to be done to him.
And this hadith indicates that whoever dislikes for his brother what he loves for himself, or loves for his brother what he dislikes for himself, is not a believer, meaning he is not a believer with complete faith.
And it indicates that this is among the major sins, if you love for your brother what you dislike for yourself, or dislike for him what you love for yourself. And on this basis, it is obligatory for you, my Muslim brother, to train yourself on this, to love for your brothers what you love for yourself, so that you achieve faith. And it is authentic from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) that he said:
Whoever wishes to be delivered from the fire and enter the garden should die with faith in Allah and the Last Day and should treat the people as he wishes to be treated by them
Sahih Muslim 1844a
: The first is the right of Allah, and the second is the right of the servants. Death comes to you while you believe in Allah and the Last Day - we ask Allah to make us and you so - and that you do for your brother what you like to be done for you.
And as for Anas's second hadith, it is the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family):
Help your brother, whether he is an oppressor or he is an oppressed one.
Sahih al-Bukhari 2443
Help means defending another, that is, repelling what harms him,
Help your brother
that is: repel what harms him, whether he is an oppressor or an oppressed person,
Abu Bakra reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: There would soon be turmoil. Behold! there would be turmoil in which the one who would be seated would be better than one who would stand and the one who would stand would be better than one who would run. Behold! when the turmoil comes or it appears, the one who has camel should stick to his camel and he who has sheep or goat should stick to his sheep and goat and he who has land should stick to the land. A person said: 'Allah's Messenger, what is your opinion about one who has neither camel nor sheep nor land? Thereupon, he said: He should take hold of his sword and beat its edge with the help of stone and then try to find a way of escape. O Allah, I have conveyed (Thy Message) ; O Allah, I have conveyed (Thy Message) ; O Allah, I have conveyed (Thy Message). A person said: Allah's Messenger, what is your opinion if I am drawn to a rank in spite of myself, or in one of the groups and made to march and a man strikes with his sword or there comes an arrow and kills me? Thereupon he said: He will bear the punishment of his sin and that of yours and he would be one amongst the denizens of Hell.
Sahih Muslim 2887a
, and he did not say: "Then I do not help him." He said: "How do I help him?" meaning I will help him, but tell me how I help him,
He said: You prevent him - or he said: stop him - from oppression, and that is helping him.
: If you see this man wanting to encroach upon people, prevent him. This is helping him, preventing him. But if he is oppressed, helping him is defending him against the oppressor.
And in this is evidence for the obligation of helping the oppressed, and for the obligation of helping the oppressor in this manner mentioned by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
