The Shaykh : These are the hadiths that the author mentioned in: The Chapter on Weeping out of Fear of Allah, or out of Longing for Him, Glorified and Exalted is He:
He mentioned several hadiths in it, among them is the hadith of 'Abdullah ibn al-Shikhkhir (may Allah be pleased with him):
That he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was praying, and there was a hissing sound from his chest like the hissing of a boiling pot أنه أتى النّبيّ صلى الله عليه وسلم وهو يصلي، وكان لصدره أزيز كأزيز المرجل
: The mirjal is a pot that boils over the fire and has a known sound, and the hissing sound from the chest of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) was undoubtedly from fear of Allah, so this is weeping out of fear of Allah.
And he mentioned the hadith of Ubayy ibn Ka'b that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said to him: إنَّ الله أمرني أن أقرأ عليك سورة لم يكن الذين كفروا من أهل الكتاب والمشركين منفكين فقال: أوَ سمّاني لك؟ قال: نعم، فبكى That Allah commanded me to read to you the surah "Those who disbelieved from among the People of the Book and the polytheists will not be separated," so he said: Did He name you to you? He said: Yes, so he wept : But this weeping may be a longing for Allah, Mighty and Majestic, because the command of his Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) to whoever reads this surah to Ubayy indicates the high status of Ubayy ibn Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him), and it is possible that it was from joy, for a person may weep when he is happy just as he weeps when he is sad.
Then the author (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned hadiths, all of which indicate weeping in sadness over what has passed, among them is the hadith of Umm Ayman (may Allah be pleased with her), when the two Companions Abu Bakr and 'Umar visited her; they came to her as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to visit her, so when they came to her she wept, and they said to her:
What makes you weep? Do you not know that what is with Allah is better for His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him and his family)? She said: Yes, I do not weep because I do not know—meaning rather I know—but I weep because the revelation has ceased from the sky—the revelation has ceased—so she wept, and they wept with her ما يبكيك؟
.
And likewise the hadith of 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) when food was brought to him while he was fasting, and a fasting person usually desires food, but he (may Allah be pleased with him) remembered the state of the early Companions, and he—meaning 'Abd al-Rahman was among the early Companions—was from the emigrants (may Allah be pleased with him), but out of humility for himself he said:
That Mus'ab ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was better than him إن مصعب بن عمير رضي الله عنه كان خيرا منه
: And Mus'ab was a young man, he was with his parents in Makkah, and his parents were wealthy, his mother and father would dress him in the best clothing, the clothing of youth and young men, and they spoiled him greatly, so when he embraced Islam they abandoned him and exiled him, and he emigrated with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) and was with the emigrants, and he was wearing a patched garment.
