The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Chapter on Encouraging Asceticism Regarding the World and Taking Little from It":
The world is this life in which we live. It is called "dunya" (world) for two reasons.
And the Hereafter is better for you than the first [life].
[Ad-Duhaa 93:4]
.
The second reason is that it is base and is nothing in comparison to the Hereafter. As Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated from the hadith of al-Mustawrid ibn Shaddad, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
And the space occupied by the whip of one of you in Paradise is better than the world and what is on it.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1664Sahih (Darussalam)
This is the world.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned many verses, all of which indicate that a person of intellect should not rely on the world, or be deceived by it, or be distracted by it from the Hereafter, or have it prevent him from the remembrance of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). Among them is His saying:
The example of [this] worldly life is but like rain which We have sent down from the sky
[Yunus 10:24]
: meaning the rain,
that the plants of the earth absorb
[Yunus 10:24]
until, when the earth has taken on its adornment and is beautified
[Yunus 10:24]
: meaning it was completed,
and its people suppose that they have capability over it, there comes to it Our command by night or by day, and We make it as a harvest, as if it had not flourished yesterday
[Yunus 10:24]
: as if it had not been. This is worldly life. Consider this in your reality: how many people you lived with who lived in this world a satisfying life, with comfort, companionship, children, wives, palaces, and cars, and then they departed from it as if they had not been yesterday. They departed from it, or something comes to their world that destroys it. How many a rich person with great wealth became poor, asking people for help? This is the world. And Allah struck this parable so that we would not be deceived by it.
likewise كذلك
: meaning this kind of detail and clarification,
Thus do We explain in detail the signs for a people who give thought.
[Yunus 10:24]
: for those who have thought in matters and look at consequences. Then He said:
And Allah calls to the abode of peace
: meaning what is the difference between this and that? The abode of peace is Paradise. I ask Allah to make me and you among its people. The abode of peace is safe from every sorrow, from every bitterness, from every harm. When He mentioned the world, He said:
And Allah calls to the abode of peace
, so to which of the two do you incline? There is no doubt that a person of intellect inclines to the abode of peace, and the abode of perishing, bitterness, and annoyance does not concern him. So He (Blessed and Exalted is He) calls all creation to the abode of peace,
and guides whom He wills to a straight path
[Yunus 10:25]
: guidance is restricted; He did not say He guides everyone,
He guides whom He wills to a straight path." يهدي من يشاء إلى صراط مستقيم
[Al-Baqarah 2:142]
, so who is the one worthy and deserving of Allah's guidance? It is the one who turns to Allah (Mighty and Majestic), as He said:
and guides to Himself whoever turns back [to Him] - ويهدي إليه من أناب
[Ar-Ra'd 13:27]
, and He said:
And when they deviated, Allah caused their hearts to deviate.
[As-Saf 61:5]
, so whoever has a good and sincere intention seeking the Face of Allah and the Hereafter, this is the one whom Allah (Mighty and Majestic) guides, and he is included in His saying:
and guides whom He wills to a straight path
[Yunus 10:25]
.
Then the author mentioned other verses, such as His saying:
And present to them the example of the life of this world, [its being] like rain which We send down from the sky, and the vegetation of the earth mingles with it and [then] it becomes dry remnants, scattered by the winds
[Al-Kahf 18:45]
: meaning its meaning is that worldly life is like water that we sent down from the sky, which caused the earth to grow, and then it became dry stalks that the winds scatter. It dried up and the winds blow it away. So it is also with the world.
And He said:
the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children
[Al-Hadid 57:20]
: these are five things, all of which are nothing: play, amusement, adornment, boasting among you, and competition in wealth and children. Their example is:
like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers
[Al-Hadid 57:20]
: the disbelievers were amazed, because they are the ones who cling to the world, and the world intoxicates their minds. So this is a plant that grew from the rain, and the disbelievers were amazed at it, at its beauty and its freshness,
whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris
[Al-Hadid 57:20]
: it disappears,
And in the Hereafter is severe punishment and forgiveness from Allah and approval
[Al-Hadid 57:20]
: so which do you want? You want the Hereafter. The Hereafter has severe punishment for whoever prefers the world over the Hereafter, and it has forgiveness from Allah and pleasure for whoever prefers the Hereafter over the world.
And a person of intellect, when he reads the Qur'an and reflects, knows the value of the world and that it is nothing and that it is a farm for the Hereafter. So look at what you have planted in it for your Hereafter. If you have planted good, then be glad of the harvest that will please you. And if it is the opposite, then you have lost both the world and the Hereafter. We ask Allah for safety and well-being for us and for you.
