Al-Hafiz al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) quoted in his book *Riyad al-Salihin* in: "The Chapter on Scrupulousness and Avoiding Doubtful Matters":
From Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that a slave belonged to Abu Bakr, and Abu Bakr used to lease him out, meaning he let him work and imposed a fixed rent on him, saying: "Bring me so much and so much every day, and whatever is extra is yours." This leasing out is permissible regarding slaves, if a person has slaves in his possession and says to them: "Go work and bring me so much and so much in dirhams every day, and whatever is extra is yours." Then this is permissible, because the slaves are the property of the master, so whatever they earn is his, whether he leases them out on that basis or not. However, the benefit of leasing out is that if the slave earns what was agreed upon with his master, he is allowed to remain without working, to remain seeking knowledge, to remain resting in his house, or to work and take what is extra. As for the workers that a person brings to the country and says: "Go, and you owe me so much and so much in dirhams every month," then this is forbidden, injustice, and contrary to the state's system, and the contract in this manner is invalid. So the master has no right to anything of what he imposed on these workers, because the worker might toil and tire and not earn what his guarantor imposed on him, and he might not earn anything at all, so there is injustice in this. As for the slaves, they are the person's slaves, their wealth and what is in their hands is his. This slave of Abu Bakr, Abu Bakr had leased him out for a specific amount to bring to him every day. On one of the days, the slave presented food to Abu Bakr, and Abu Bakr ate it.. When the slave said this to Abu Bakr, Abu Bakr put his hand in his mouth and vomited up everything he had eaten; he vomited up everything he ate and expelled it from his stomach. Why? So that his stomach would not be nourished by what is forbidden, and this is forbidden wealth, because it is payment for what is forbidden.
Abu Bakr had a slave who used to give him some of his earnings. Abu Bakr used to eat from it. One day he brought something and Abu Bakr ate from it. The slave said to him, "Do you know what this is?" Abu Bakr then enquired, "What is it?" The slave said, "Once, in the pre-Islamic period of ignorance I foretold somebody's future though I did not know this knowledge of foretelling but I, cheated him, and when he met me, he gave me something for that service, and that is what you have eaten from." Then Abu Bakr put his hand in his mouth and vomited whatever was present in his stomach.
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
