The Reciter: Zayd ibn Yahya narrated to us, saying: Ibn Numayr narrated to us, saying: Hisham ibn Urwah informed us from his father from Aisha, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer during his illness, so he used to lead them. Urwah said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) felt some relief in his condition, so he went out, and there was Abu Bakr leading the people. When Abu Bakr saw him, he stepped back, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gestured to him to remain in his place. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sat opposite Abu Bakr, beside him. Thus, Abu Bakr would pray following the prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and the people would pray following the prayer of Abu Bakr.

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate. Al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) says: The chapter on one who stands beside the imam due to a cause, meaning for a legitimate reason. This is because the prescribed imam is to be in front of the worshippers, as he is their imam, and he does not pray between them, for that is contrary to the Sunnah. However, if there is a cause, such as there being no place except beside the imam, then there is no harm in this, as it is an excuse. But where does he stand? He stands on the right side of the imam.
