The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may prayers and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions:
He (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "The Chapter on Forgiveness and Turning Away from the Ignorant:
Allah the Exalted said:
Take what is given freely, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant.
[Al-A'raf 7:199]
.
And He the Exalted said:
so forgive with gracious forgiveness.
[Al-Hijr 15:85]
.
And He said:
and let them pardon and overlook. Would you not like that Allah should forgive you? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
[An-Nur 24:22]
.
And He said, the Exalted:
and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good;
[Ali 'Imran 3:134]
.
And Allah the Exalted said:
And whoever is patient and forgives - indeed, that is of the matters [requiring] determination.
[Ash-Shuraa 42:43]
.
It was narrated from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Messenger of Allah, has there come upon you a day more terrible than the day of Uhud. He said: I have experienced from thy people and the hardest treatment I met from them was what I received from them on the day of `Aqaba. I betook myself to Ibn `Abd Yalil b. `Abd Kulal with the purpose of inviting him to Islam, but he did not respond to me as I desired. So I departed with signs of (deep) distress on my face. I did not recover until I reached Qarn al-Tha`alib. Where I raised my head, lo! near me was a cloud which had cast its shadow on me. I looked and lo! there was in it the angel Jibril who called out to me and said: God, the Honoured and Glorious, has heard what thy people have said to thee, and how they have reacted to thy call. And He has sent to thee the angel in charge of the mountains so that thou mayest order him what thou wishest (him to do) with regard to them. The angel in charge of the mountains (then) called out to me, greeted me and said: Muhammad, God has listened to what thy people have said to thee. I am the angel in charge of the mountains, and thy Lord has sent me to thee so that thou mayest order me what thou wishest. If thou wishest that I should bring together the two mountains that stand opposite to each other at the extremities of Mecca to crush them in between, (I would do that). But the Messenger of Allah (may peace he upon him) said to him: I rather hope that God will produce from their descendants such persons as will worship Allah, the One, and will not ascribe partners to Him.

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
The author al-Nawawi, in his book *Riyad al-Salihin* (The Gardens of the Righteous), said: "The Chapter on Forgiveness and Turning Away from the Ignorant", then he cited verses that we have discussed previously in earlier chapters.
Then he mentioned the hadith of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) in which she asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Did a day ever pass over you that was harder than the Day of Uhud?
: Because the Day of Uhud was severe for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Day of Uhud was a battle that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) fought when Quraysh gathered to attack him to take revenge for the killing of their leaders at Badr. For at Badr, which was in the second year, they killed some of their leaders who had honor and status in Quraysh. And in Shawwal of the following year, which was the third year, Quraysh gathered and came to Madinah to attack the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) heard of them, he consulted his Companions on whether to go out to meet them or stay in Madinah and fight them if they entered. The young men and those who had not been present at Badr advised him to go out to meet them, so he went out to meet them (peace and blessings be upon him) with about a thousand fighters. However, about a third of the army deserted him, for they were hypocrites, refuge with Allah, and they said:
If we had known [there would be] fighting, we would have followed you
[Ali 'Imran 3:167]
. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained with about seven hundred men. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) arranged them in the best possible formation on the slope of Mount Uhud. The battle took place, and the polytheists were defeated at the beginning of the day. The Muslims began to collect the spoils of war. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) had placed fifty archers at the pass of the mountain to protect the backs of the Muslims. When these archers saw that the Muslims had defeated the polytheists and were collecting the spoils, they said: "Let us go down from here to help the Muslims collect the spoils," thinking that was the case. But their commander, Abdullah ibn Jubayr, reminded them of what the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) had said to them. For when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) placed them in that location, he said:
Do not leave your place, and do not exceed it, whether it is for us or against us.
. But Allah forgave them; they hastened and most of them went down. When the cavalry of Quraysh saw that the position of the archers was empty, they turned back and attacked the Muslims from behind. Among them were Khalid ibn al-Walid and Ikrimah ibn Abi Jahl, who later embraced Islam and became two of the foremost horsemen of the Muslims. And that is the favor of Allah, which He grants to whom He wills. They entered upon the Muslims from behind and mixed with them. Seventy men from the Muslims were martyred, led by the Lion of Allah and the Lion of His Messenger, Hamzah ibn Abd al-Muttalib, the uncle of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) used to honor him and hold him in high esteem. And what happened to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) happened: they struck his face, gashed it, and blood began to flow from his face. Fatimah was washing it, washing the blood until it would not stop, so she burned a mat, meaning palm fronds, and sprinkled it on him until it stopped. They broke his canine tooth (peace and blessings be upon him). And great tribulation occurred. Great tribulation happened, about which Allah the Exalted said:
(165) Why [is it that] when a [single] disaster struck you [on the day of Uhud], although you had struck [the enemy in the battle of Badr] with one twice as great, you said, "From where is this?" Say, "It is from yourselves." Indeed, Allah is over all things competent. (166) And what struck you on the day the two armies met was by permission of Allah that He might make evident the [true] believers.
[Ali 'Imran 3:165-166]
,
And [He is] the best Master and the best Helper.
: As long as the matter is by His permission, it is good. And what happened in this regarding the severity upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions, they carried the martyrs to Madinah, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that they be returned to their places of martyrdom, to the place where they were martyred, and they were buried there, so that they would rise on the Day of Resurrection from this place where they were martyred. May Allah be pleased with them and grant them satisfaction. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Aisha when she asked him:
Did a day ever pass over you that was harder than the Day of Uhud? He said: Yes.
, and he told her the story of his going to Ta'if. For when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called Quraysh in Makkah and they did not respond to him, he went out to Ta'if to convey the words of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). He called the people of Ta'if, but they were more foolish than the people of Makkah. They and their fools gathered and formed two facing lines in the path of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). They began to throw stones at him, throwing pebbles until they bled his heels (peace and blessings be upon him). He went out, distressed and worried, and did not regain consciousness until he was at Qarn al-Tha'labayn. So a cloud shaded him, and he raised his head and saw in this cloud Jibril (peace be upon him), and he said to him:
This is the Angel of the Mountains greeting you with peace—so he greeted him and said—My Lord has sent me to you, so if you wish that I crush them—meaning the two mountains—I will do it.
. But the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), due to his forbearance, foresight, and deliberation in matters, said:
No. لا
, because if he had caused the two mountains to crush them, they would have perished.
No but I hope that Allah will let them beget children who will worship Allah Alone, and will worship None besides Him.
Sahih al-Bukhari 3231
: And this is what happened: that Allah the Exalted brought forth from the wombs of these polytheists who afflicted the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) with this great affliction, those who worship Allah alone and associate nothing with Him. This shows that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) experienced something more severe than what happened to him at Uhud, and he experienced various types of harm, but he was patient. And among the greatest of what happened: he was once prostrating under the Ka'bah, praying to Allah. The Sacred Mosque is such that if a man found his father being killed in it, he would not kill him. And he was prostrating when some of the fools of Quraysh and those who transgressed among them said: "Go to the camel of so-and-so's family and bring its placenta and place it on Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) while he is prostrating". So they went and brought the placenta of the she-camel, and the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) was prostrating under the Ka'bah, and they placed it on his back to humiliate him and anger him. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained prostrating until his daughter Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) came and removed the placenta from his back. He rose from prostration, and when he finished the prayer, he raised his hands (peace and blessings be upon him) to supplicate to Allah the Exalted against these leaders of Quraysh.
The point is that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) was afflicted with the most severe affliction, and yet he forgave, pardoned, was deliberate, and hoped. So Allah conveyed to him, praise be to Allah, what he desired, and he achieved victory, clear and glorious victory. Thus, a person should be patient with affliction, especially if he is afflicted for the sake of Allah, for he will be patient, count it as a reward, and await relief. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
And know that victory is with patience, and that relief is with distress, and that with hardship is ease.
And Allah knows best.
