The reciter: He said -may Allah have mercy on him-: "The Chapter on Enduring Harm:
Allah the Exalted said:
and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good;
[Ali 'Imran 3:134]
.
And He the Exalted said:
And whoever is patient and forgives - indeed, that is of the matters [requiring] determination.
[Ash-Shuraa 42:43]
.
And from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him):
Abu Huraira reported that a person said: Allah's Messenger, I have relatives with whom I try, to have close relationship, but they sever (this relation). I treat them well, but they treat me ill. I am sweet to them but they are harsh towards me. Upon this he (the Holy Prophet) said: If it is so as you say, then you in fact throw hot ashes (upon their faces) and there would always remain with you on behalf of Allah (an Angel to support you) who would keep you dominant over them so long as you adhere to this (path of righteousness).

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
The author said -may Allah have mercy on him-: "The Chapter on Patience with Harm": Harm is that by which a person is hurt, whether by speech, action, or otherwise. Harm may be in a religious matter or a worldly matter. If it is in a religious matter, meaning that a man is harmed for the sake of his religion, then in this -patience with harm- there is an example to follow in the noble messengers (peace be upon them), for Allah says:
And certainly were messengers denied before you, but they were patient over [the effects of] denial, and they were harmed until Our victory came to them.
[Al-An'am 6:34]
: they were harmed until the help of Allah came to them, Mighty and Majestic. And if a person has religion with him, and he enjoins good and forbids evil, he must be harmed. But he must be patient, and if he is patient, the outcome is for the righteous. A person may be tested according to the measure of his religion, so Allah sends upon him those who harm him as a trial and test, as Allah the Exalted said:
And of the people are some who say, "We believe in Allah," but when one [of them] is harmed for [the cause of] Allah, they consider the trial of the people as [if ومن الناس مَن يقول آمنا بالله فإذا أذوي في الله جعل فتنة الناس كعذاب
[Al-'Ankabut 29:10]
: meaning, if he is harmed in the way of Allah, from the side of his religion, his enjoining of good, his forbidding of evil, and his calling to good, he makes the trial of people like a punishment, so he turns back on his heels, may Allah protect us from that. As in His saying:
And of the people is he who worships Allah on an edge. If he is touched by good, he is reassured by it; but if he is struck by trial, he turns on his face [to the other direction]. He has lost [this] world and the Hereafter. That is what is the manifest loss.
[Al-Hajj 22:11]
: meaning, some people worship Allah on the edge; they do not have established worship. If good befalls them and no trial or harm comes to them, they continue, walking and being at peace. But if a trial befalls them: a doubt, harm, or the like, they turn on their faces, may Allah protect us from that, losing this world and the Hereafter. So it is obligatory to be patient with harm for the sake of Allah, Mighty and Majestic. As for harm in matters related to worldly affairs and dealing with people, you have the choice: if you wish, be patient; if you wish, take your right. And patience is better, except if in patience there is aggression and continuation in aggression, then taking your right is more appropriate. Let us suppose you have a neighbor who harms you with noisy sounds, or knocking on the wall, or parking his car in front of your house, or the like. Then the right is yours; he did not harm you for the sake of Allah. If you wish, be patient and endure and wait for relief, and Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, will make for you a supporter against him. If you wish, take your right, by the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And whoever avenges himself after having been wronged - those have not upon them any cause [for blame].
[Ash-Shuraa 42:41]
: But patience is better as long as it does not result in increased aggression from the aggressor. In that case, it is better to take his right to deter him from his injustice.
Then the author mentioned -may Allah have mercy on him- the hadith of Abu Hurayrah, mentioning two verses about which speech has preceded:
and who restrain anger and who pardon the people
[Ali 'Imran 3:134]
,
And whoever is patient and forgives - indeed, that is of the matters [requiring] determination.
[Ash-Shuraa 42:43]
, and speech has preceded about them.
Then he mentioned the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), in which a man said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
I have relatives with whom I try, to have close relationship, but they sever (this relation). I treat them well, but they treat me ill. I am sweet to them but they are harsh towards me.
Sahih Muslim 2558a
: meaning, so what should I do? So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
If it is as you say, then it is as if you are feeding them hot ashes, and Allah the Exalted will continue to be a helper for you against them.
Sahih Ibn Hibban 6:144
: meaning, a supporter who Allah will support you with against them, even if in the future. For these relatives, may Allah protect us from that, their relative maintains ties with them, but they cut him off; he does good to them, but they do evil to him; he is patient with them and forgives and overlooks, but they are ignorant toward him and increase in that. So these, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
It is as if you are feeding them hot ashes.
. Al-mal: hot ash. And tasaffahum means: you feed it to them in their mouths. And it is an idiom that this man is victorious over them. And the one who truly maintains ties is not the one who reciprocates with the one who maintains ties with him, but the one who truly maintains ties is the one who, if his ties are cut, he maintains them. This is the true maintainer of ties. So a person should be patient and seek reward from Allah for the harm of his relatives, neighbors, companions, and others. So he will not cease to have from Allah a support against them, and he is the winner and they are the losers. May Allah guide us and you to what is good and reform in this world and the Hereafter.
