The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may prayers and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions:
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) transmitted, in the context of the hadiths in the chapter on the hadiths of the Dajjal and the signs of the Hour, among other things:
“From Mirdas al-Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Riyad as-Salihin 1828 Al-Bukhari narrated it.
And from Rafi'ah ibn Rafi' al-Zuqri (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:Riyad as-Salihin 1829 Al-Bukhari narrated it.
And from Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Riyad as-Salihin 1830 Agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim”.
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
These are also among the hadiths that al-Nawawi mentioned at the end of his book *Riyad al-Salihin*, in the appendices:
Among them is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:: meaning he does not care about them, does not have mercy on them, and does not send down mercy upon them. So the righteous ones go, the first then the next. This hadith resembles the hadith of Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him): . So this hadith resembles the hadith we referred to, and therefore you find people becoming worse, each year worse than the one before, as the righteous ones go, the first then the next.
In what has passed, you find people performing tahajjud at night, fasting during the day, giving charity from their sustenance, and preferring others over themselves. In a day, you find people changing from one year to another to become worse than before. They stay up at night in something other than the obedience of Allah, and sleep during the day, or engage in play, or in buying and selling that involves deception, lying, and betrayal, refuge with Allah. So people are becoming worse.
But despite that, there is good among people, praise be to Allah. There are people, praise be to Allah, who are upright on the religion of Allah, as it should be. But the criterion is the general and the comprehensive. For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed us, as in the third hadith, which al-Bukhari narrated: that when people are sent down with punishment, it encompasses everyone. As Allah the Exalted said:[Al-Anfal 8:25], : everyone according to what they are upon.
Therefore, one must be cautious lest he be among the dregs, like the dregs of barley or dates, and he should strive to be upright on the command of Allah. Even if the people have perished, if they are struck by punishment, each of them will be resurrected on the Day of Resurrection according to his intention.
Also, among the appendices is::
Badr is a known place name between Makkah and al-Madinah. There was a battle there between the Muslims and the polytheists. The cause was that Abu Sufyan Sakhr ibn Harb was a leader among his people, among the people of Makkah. He had come from al-Sham with a caravan, meaning camels carrying food for the people of Makkah. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) heard that he was coming to Makkah, he informed his companions that Abu Sufyan was coming to Makkah with a caravan, meaning trade for the people of Makkah.
And the people of Makkah had driven the Muslims out of their homes and their wealth, and had made their wealth lawful to take. So it was permissible for the believers to make the wealth of the disbelievers lawful to take, as a just recompense. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) encouraged his companions to go out to this caravan. And we asked what the caravan was? Yes, trade, loads of camels loaded with trade from al-Sham to Makkah.
He encouraged his companions to go out for the caravan only. So he went out with three hundred and some men, meaning between ten and twenty, three hundred and twenty-three or three hundred and ten or something in between. They had no weapons, they had only seventy camels to take turns riding, and horses only, because they did not go out for fighting. They went out for the caravan to take it and return.
Abu Sufyan was a shrewd, intelligent man. He sent to the people of Makkah and said to them: “Save your caravan. Muhammad and his companions will come out to us to take it.” Then he took the path along the sea, on the edge of the sea, far away, meaning he turned right, farther from al-Madinah. When Quraysh heard this, the zeal of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance took hold of them, so they mobilized and all of them set out, with their nobles and their great ones, for a purpose that Allah the Mighty and Majestic willed.
When they came out beyond Makkah, the news came to them that Abu Sufyan had been safe and had escaped, because he had taken the path along the sea, far from al-Madinah, and the Messenger and his companions had not caught up with him. They consulted among themselves and said: “Since the caravan has been saved, we will return to Makkah. What do we have to do with wars?” So their elders, like Abu Jahl and others, said: “By Allah, we will not return to Makkah ever until we reach Badr—and it is the branching point between the road to Makkah and al-Madinah and al-Sham—until we reach Badr. Listen: we will slaughter the camels, and we will drink the intoxicants, refuge with Allah, and the female singers will play for us, the maids will play for them with the hand drums, with joy and delight, and the Arabs will hear of us and they will continue to fear us forever”. I seek refuge with Allah.
They went out as Allah the Mighty and Majestic said:[Al-Anfal 8:47]: So they were determined to face the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and they met at Badr. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his companions, how many did we tell you?
The student: Three hundred and some.
The Shaykh : Three hundred and some men, and Quraysh were nine hundred men, between nine hundred and a thousand. But Quraysh was prepared for war, with equipment and strength. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) was not prepared, but Allah the Mighty and Majestic brought them together without an appointment to carry out what He decreed and willed, Mighty and Majestic.
They met, and in this Allah the Mighty and Majestic says:[Al-Anfal 8:43]: The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) saw Quraysh in a dream, a little, to encourage himself to meet them. [Al-Anfal 8:43], [Al-Anfal 8:44]: Glory be to Allah!! They saw the Companions as few, and the Companions saw them as few. Why? So that each one would be energized to face the other.
So they met and a battle took place. A large number of the Muslims were killed. How many? Seventy men. Yes, seventy men from the people of Makkah were killed and seventy men were taken captive. And seventy men from the Muslims were killed at Uhud. Those days, Allah alternates them among people.
The important thing is that the battle took place, and they fought a severe fight, and the leaders of Quraysh were killed, their elders and their great leaders. Among them were the seven or eight who threw dung on the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was prostrating under the Ka'bah, in a story that is not the place to mention here, but it is well known.
A group of Quraysh in the Haram, and the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) was praying to Allah the Mighty and Majestic under the Ka'bah before he migrated. When he prostrated, some of them said to each other:: Take a place. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) remained. Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) was there in the mosque, but he said: “I am young, I fear for myself if I went to remove the dung from the back of the Messenger, something that would harm me would happen to me.” So the young Fatimah, the daughter of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), came. They went and informed her, so she came, and she was a girl, and she removed the dung and the excrement from him, and he stood up and completed his prayer. And when he completed his prayer, he called upon his Lord the Mighty and Majestic, he called upon his Lord and said: .
Then the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered regarding them, meaning the great leaders, and they were thrown into a pit at Badr. A pit: a foul, stinking well, to humiliate them. Their bodies were thrown into the well, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained victorious and triumphant in that place for three days. And it was his custom when he fought a people and was victorious over them to remain in the camp for three days.
And on one of the days, he ordered his camel to be saddled, then he rode it until he stood over the well. The well, what is it? The one with the elders of Quraysh. And he called out to them, “O so-and-so ibn so-and-so,” calling them as if he were calling someone in front of him:Sunan an-Nasa'i 2074Sahih (Darussalam): Victory, and praise be to Allah, and His victory, and by Allah, a victory for us to this day, victory. : meaning they hear my words more than you hear, but they cannot answer.
The important thing is, those who fought at Badr, we told you, how many were they?
The student: Three hundred and a few men.
The Shaykh : Three hundred and a few men, who are among the best of the Muslims. Do you know what their Lord, Mighty and Majestic, said to them? He said:Sunan Abi Dawud 2650Sahih (Al-Albani) -We ask Allah for His favor-: Every sin committed by one of the people of Badr is forgiven for him, no matter how great it is; it is forgiven for them. However, they will not disbelieve, because Allah said: Sunan Abi Dawud 2650Sahih (Al-Albani): And this means they will not turn back on their heels. But if they committed the greatest sin, it would be forgiven for them.
And this was put into practice. One of them, one of those who witnessed Badr, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wanted to go to Quraysh in the Battle of the Conquest, the story is long. Is it all right, shall we stop? Yes?
The student: We continue.
The Shaykh : He sent Hatib, who was among those who were present at the Battle of Badr. He sent a woman with a letter to Quraysh, saying to them: The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) is going to attack you, so be on guard. Allah revealed this action to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so he sent two men, one of whom was 'Ali ibn Abi Talib, to this woman. They caught up with her at Rawdat Khakh, and they seized her. They said: Where are you going? She said: To Makkah. What do you have with you? She said: I have nothing with me. They said: You have nothing with you? Why did they insist on her when they did not know? The answer is that they knew, because the Messenger told them:.
They said to her: Either you give us what you have, or else, meaning, we will expose you. We searched you and found that wherever it was, it had to come out, so she produced it for them. And there was: a letter from Hatib ibn Balta'ah (may Allah be pleased with him), who was among those who witnessed Badr. They brought it to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and presented it to him, so he called him. What is this, O Hatib? What is this, O Hatib? How do you betray us? How do you send news of us to Quraysh? And this is called by people what? It is called a spy. How do you do this? He excused himself with an excuse, then 'Umar or another of the Companions said:.
So this ugly, terrible, and great deed resulted in forgiveness. Why? Why? Because the man was one of the people of Badr. So these are the people of Badr, may Allah be pleased with them, and may He gather us and you with them in the Gardens of Pleasure. And we ask Allah that our discussion be...
And that we gather with them, if Allah wills, in the Gardens of Pleasure in the best state. These are the people of Badr. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) prevented the killing of this man because he was what?
The student: He witnessed Badr.
The Shaykh : He witnessed Badr.
