The Ruling and Method of Offering the Reward to the Deceased

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Regarding offering the reward of Hajj and 'Umrah, as a voluntary act, does it reach the deceased?

Answer:
To the deceased and the elderly.
Q: And is this voluntary act established from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?
The Shaykh: The hadith is general.
Q: And voluntary fasting?
The Shaykh: Yes, fasting... obligatory fasting is performed, the fasting of the obligation. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: If anyone dies in a state (that he had to complete) some fasts, his heir must fast on his behalf.من مات وعليه صيام صام عنه وَلِيُّه
Sahih Muslim 1147
meaning his relative.
Q: Did not all the hadiths regarding fasting come in response to questions about the obligation?
The Shaykh: The voluntary act is like... the hadith of Shubruma does not mention an obligation. When he heard him saying: "Labbaik for Shubruma." He said:
Who is Shubrumah?من شبرمة؟
He said: "A brother of mine or a relative." He said:
Did you perform Hajj for yourself?حجيت عن نفسك؟
He said: "No," he said:
perform hajj on your own behalf, then perform it on behalf of Shubrumah.حج عن نفسك ثم حج عن شبرمة
Sunan Abi Dawud 1811Sahih (Al-Albani)
and he did not ask him whether it was an obligation or a voluntary act.
Q: Offering the reward to the deceased through charity and others?
The Shaykh: The same charity, one gives charity with the intention for him, intending it for him, or Hajj or 'Umrah or supplication.
Q: Some people say that its reward reaches, or that they offer it to so-and-so, for example?
The Shaykh: ... the intention, Allah knows what is in his heart. If he intends it with his heart; that is sufficient. If he intends it for so-and-so, that is sufficient. He knows the unseen and knows what is in hearts.
