Prohibition is not established except by five breastfeedings within the two-year period

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: A woman breastfed a daughter who was six days old, twice in two days, each time nursing her until she was full. When the wet nurse was asked whether, each time she nursed her, she would interrupt the breastfeeding by something like a breath, or moving from one breast to the other, or otherwise, she answered that she was certain she had filled the girl twice in two days, but she did not know whether the girl would continue nursing until she was full if she held the breast, or whether she would stop and then return to it; because that was seventeen years ago. Does this breastfeeding make the aforementioned girl forbidden to the sons of the woman who breastfed her, or not? This is the end of the question.

Answer: If the situation is as Your Eminence has described, then the aforementioned breastfeeding does not make the breastfed girl forbidden to the sons of the wet nurse; because prohibition—in the most correct of the opinions—is not established except by five breastfeedings within the two-year period; due to the authentic and well-known hadith of A'ishah regarding this, and her second hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in which he said:
Suckling once or twice does not make (marriage) unlawful.
Sunan Ibn Majah 1941Sahih (Darussalam)
, and in another wording:
Breastfeeding once or twice
Sunan Ibn Majah 1940Sahih (Darussalam)
, both of which were narrated by Muslim in his Sahih.
The original presumption is the absence of the five feedings, and the wet nurse expressed doubt regarding anything beyond the two feedings, and the original presumption is the absence of an increase. However, it is better and more cautious to refrain from the sons of the wet nurse marrying the aforementioned girl; acting in accordance with the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
So he, who saves himself from these doubtful things, saves his religion and his honor
Bulugh al-Maram 16:32
, the hadith, and the other hadith:
and sin is what fluctuates in your chest, and you would hate that the people discovered it about you.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2389Sahih (Darussalam)
, and the third hadith:
Leave what causes doubt for what does not cause doubt.
.
So if you see fit to bring the suitor and advise him to refrain, that is better. May Allah guide your vision, and bless your efforts, and may Allah take charge of you, and peace.
