The waiting period and mourning are obligatory for a woman immediately after the death of her husband

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: From 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Baz, to the honorable brother R. M. J. M. (may Allah guide him to all good), amen.
Peace be upon you, and Allah's mercy and blessings. As for what follows:
Your noble letter dated 10/4/1389 AH has reached us (may Allah guide you), along with the question it contained: about the ruling in the case of a woman whose husband died, and she did not observe mourning for him until a year had passed since his death, which was known.

And the answer: It is obligatory for a woman to observe the waiting period and mourning immediately after the death of her husband for four months and ten days if she is not pregnant. As for if she is pregnant, the waiting period and mourning are obligatory for her until she gives birth.
If she did not learn of her husband's death until the period had passed, then she owes no waiting period and no mourning; because her time has passed. It is not permissible for a woman to consider herself in a waiting period or mourning after the period has passed. If she was ignorant, she should learn, and the ruling of the Shari'ah should be explained to her; because most people are ignorant of the rulings of the Shari'ah.
We ask Allah to grant us and you and all Muslims understanding in His religion, and steadfastness upon it; He is the best of those asked.
