The Ruling on Dialogue with Jews and Christians Regarding Their Belief
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
As a result of our studies in America, topics concerning the Christian and Jewish religions are raised with us. Is it permissible for us to speak about them?
Answer:
Yes, it is permissible for you to speak about that according to your knowledge, but it is not permissible to speak about them or anything else without knowledge.
It is well known that the Shari'ah of the Torah and the Gospel is among the Shari'ahs that Allah sent down upon His messengers, in accordance with what befits their people in their time and circumstances. Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) is the Wise, the All-Knowing in everything He legislates and decrees, as He (Glorified and Exalted is He) said: [Surat al-Ma'idah: 48]. This is after He mentioned the sending down of the Torah, the Gospel, and the Qur'an in Surat al-Ma'idah. And He (Glorified and Exalted is He) said: [Surat al-An'am: 83].
Then the Jews and the Christians distorted and altered, and they introduced into their Shari'ahs what is not part of them. Then Allah sent His Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) with a general message for all the inhabitants of the earth—both jinn and humans—and He legislated for him a general Shari'ah. By that, the Shari'ah of the Torah and the Gospel was abrogated.
And He made it obligatory upon all the people of the earth to judge by the Shari'ah with which Allah sent Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and to adhere to it to the exclusion of everything else, as He (Glorified and Exalted is He) addressed His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in Surat al-Ma'idah: [al-Ma'idah:48]. And He (Mighty and Majestic) said: [al-Nisa':65], and He (Mighty and Majestic) said: [al-Ma'idah:50].
And the verses on this matter are numerous. Whoever reflects upon the Noble Qur'an and increases in its recitation, with the intention of benefiting and acting upon it, Allah will guide him to the path of truth. As Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) said: [Surat al-Isra: 9].

Indeed, your Lord is Wise and Knowing.
Then the Jews and the Christians distorted and altered, and they introduced into their Shari'ahs what is not part of them. And We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], the Book in truth, confirming that which preceded it of the Scripture and as a criterion over it. So judge between them by what Allah has revealed and do not follow their inclinations away from what has come to you of the truth. To each of you We prescribed a law and a method
But no, by your Lord, they will not [truly] believe until they make you, [O Muhammad], judge concerning that over which they dispute among themselves and then find within themselves no discomfort from what you have judged and submit in [full, willing] submission.
Then is it the judgement of [the time of] ignorance they desire? But who is better than Allah in judgement for a people who are certain [in faith].
And the verses on this matter are numerous. As Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) said:
Indeed, this Qur'an guides to that which is most suitable
