Question:
What is the meaning of the statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Verily, I have been given the Qur'an and something like it with itألا إني أوتيت القرآن ومثله معه
?

Answer:
This is one of the authentic, established hadiths from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Its meaning, and what is similar to it, is that Allah gave him another revelation, namely the Sunnah, which explains and clarifies its meaning. As Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) said: :
And We revealed to you the message that you may make clear to the people what was sent down to them and that they might give thought.
[Surat al-Nahl: 44]. So Allah revealed the Qur'an to him, and also the Sunnah, which are the hadiths established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding prayer, zakah, fasting, Hajj, and other matters of religion and worldly affairs. The Sunnah is a second revelation that Allah revealed to him to complete the message and perfect the conveyance. He (peace and blessings be upon him) expressed this through the hadiths in which he explained things to the Ummah by speech, action, and approval, such as his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
The reward of deeds depends upon the intentions and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended.
Sahih al-Bukhari 1
and his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
The prayer of none amongst you would be accepted in a state of impurity until he performs ablution.
Sahih Muslim 225
, and his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
Salat will not be accepted without purification, nor Charity from Ghulul.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1Sahih (Darussalam)
, and his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
The five prayers, and Al-Jumuah (the Friday prayer) to Al-Jumuah are atonement for what is between them, as long as the major sins have not been committed.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 214Sahih (Darussalam)
, and other authentic hadiths concerning everything the servants need and what relates to the interpretation of the Book of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) . Upon him be the best of prayers and the most complete of peace.
This revelation is a revelation that Allah revealed to him, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed about it and explained it to the Ummah. It is from Allah, a revelation in the true sense, and it is from the speech of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), such as what was mentioned earlier in his statement (peace and blessings be upon him):
Actions are only by intentions...
, etc. And his statement (peace and blessings be upon him):
The two parties to a transaction have the choice (of annulling it) so long as they have not yet parted.
Sunan Ibn Majah 2182Sahih (Darussalam)
, etc., the hadith.
Included in the second revelation given to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) are the qudsi hadiths that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) narrates from his Lord (Glorified and Exalted is He) . They are a revelation from Allah and from His speech (Glorified and Exalted is He), but they do not have the ruling of the Qur'an. For example, his statement (peace and blessings be upon him) in what he narrates from his Lord (Glorified and Exalted is He) :
O My servants, I have forbidden oppression for Myself and have made it forbidden amongst you, so do not oppress one another. O My servants, all of you are astray except for those I have guided, so seek guidance of Me and I shall guide youيا عبادي إني حرمت الظلم على نفسي وجعلته بينكم محرمًا فلا تظالموا، يا عبادي كلكم ضال إلا من هديته فاستهدوني أهدكم...
Sahih Muslim 2577a
, to the end of the hadith. It is a long hadith narrated by Muslim in his Sahih from Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) . All of this is included in the statement of the Exalted:
By the star when it descends,
[An-Najm 53:1]
“Your companion has not gone astray, nor has he erred” [Al-Najm: 1-2], meaning: Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)
Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination.
[An-Najm 53:3]
It is not but a revelation being revealed” , the verses [Al-Najm: 3-4].
