What is the evidence that plural marriage is the original norm?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : We heard from you on the phone that the original norm in marriage is plural marriage, so if you would be so kind as to grant us some evidence for this matter.

The Shaykh : He (Glorified and Exalted is He) commanded it in the Noble Qur'an:
then marry those that please you of [other] women, two or three or four فَانْكِحُوا مَا طَابَ لَكُمْ مِنَ النِّسَاءِ مَثْنَى وَثُلَاثَ وَرُبَاعَ
[An-Nisa 4:3]
This is one point, and the other is that the intended purpose of marriage is chastity, the chastity of the self from leaning to the right or to the left. There is no doubt that the types of women and their natures differ from one to another, so the more women a Muslim has, the more morally chaste he is compared to one who is content with a single wife. That is, there are many and very many reasons and means that are suitable to be an answer to your question. Among the most important of them is that in this lies the increase of the blackness of the Ummah of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), as he (peace be upon him) said:
No two Muslims whose three children die before reaching the age of discretion will be touched by the Fire except as a trial ما من مسلمين يموت لهما ثلاثة من الولد لم يبلغوا الحنث إلا لن تمسَّه النار إلا تحلَّة القسم
Sahih Ibn Hibban 11:50
So in patience regarding the death of children there is reward, and in increasing the Ummah of the Messenger there is reward, and that is his saying (peace be upon him):
Marry those who are loving and fertile, for I will boast of you before the nations on the Day of Resurrection تزوَّجوا الودود الولود ؛ فإنِّي مباهٍ بكم الأمم يوم القيامة
Perhaps you have received your answer, if Allah wills.
The student : Yes, may Allah reward you with good, if Allah wills.

The Shaykh : And beware of that.
