Explanation of the meaning of His saying, the Exalted: “Indeed, the hypocrites are in the lowest depth of the Fire”

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Allah the Exalted said in His noble Book:
Indeed, the hypocrites will be in the lowest depths of the Fireإِنَّ الْمُنَافِقِينَ فِي الدَّرْكِ الأَسْفَلِ مِنَ النَّارِ
[Al-Nisa: 145]. What is meant by the hypocrites and hypocrisy in this noble verse? I hope you would be kind enough to clarify the meaning?

Answer:
The intended meaning of the hypocrites is: those who display Islam outwardly while they are not upon Islam. They claim to be Muslims, but in their inner selves they disbelieve in Allah and lie to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). These are the hypocrites.
They were called hypocrites because they displayed Islam outwardly while concealing disbelief inwardly, as in His saying (peace and blessings be upon him) :
And of the people are some who say, "We believe in Allah and the Last Day," but they are not believers.وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَن يَقُولُ آمَنَّا بِاللّهِ وَبِالْيَوْمِ الآخِرِ وَمَا هُم بِمُؤْمِنِينَ ۝
[Al-Baqarah 2:8]
They deceive Allah and those who believe, but they only deceive themselves and do not realize. There is a disease in their hearts meaning: doubt and suspicion
so Allah has increased their disease; and for them is a painful punishment because they [habitually] used to lie.فَزَادَهُمُ اللّهُ مَرَضًا وَلَهُم عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ بِمَا كَانُوا يَكْذِبُونَ
[Surat al-Baqarah: 8-10]. And the verses following it are in Surat al-Baqarah.
These are the hypocrites, and they disbelieve in Allah and lie to His messengers, in His saying, (Exalted and Majestic is He):
Indeed, the hypocrites [think to] deceive Allah, but He is deceiving them. And when they stand for prayer, they stand lazily, showing [themselves to] the people and not remembering Allah except a little,إِنَّ الْمُنَافِقِينَ يُخَادِعُونَ اللّهَ وَهُوَ خَادِعُهُمْ وَإِذَا قَامُواْ إِلَى الصَّلاَةِ قَامُواْ كُسَالَى يُرَآؤُونَ النَّاسَ وَلاَ يَذْكُرُونَ اللّهَ إِلاَّ قَلِيلًا ۝
[An-Nisa 4:142]
“Wavering between them; they belong neither to these nor to those” [Al-Nisa: 142-143].
And the meaning is: that they are wavering between the disbelievers and the Muslims; sometimes with the disbelievers if disbelief appears and they prevail, and sometimes with the believers if they appear and prevail. So they have no steadfastness, no straight religion, and no firm faith. Rather, they are wavering between disbelief and faith, and between the disbelievers and the Muslims.
And Allah has explicitly stated their disbelief in His saying, the Exalted:
And what prevents their expenditures from being accepted from them but that they have disbelieved in Allah and in His Messenger and that they come not to prayer except while they are lazy and that they do not spend except while they are unwilling.
[At-Tawbah 9:54]
“So do not their wealth or their children delight you. Allah only intends to punish them with them in this worldly life, and that their souls will depart while they are disbelievers” [At-Tawbah: 54-55].
These are the hypocrites – we ask Allah for well-being and safety.
