The Ruling on Cartoon Drawing

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
What is the ruling on cartoon drawing, which is seen in some newspapers and magazines and includes drawing people?

Answer:
The drawing mentioned is not permissible, and it is one of the widespread evils that must be abandoned; due to the generality of the authentic hadiths indicating the prohibition of drawing every living being, whether that is by machine, by hand, or by other means.
Among these is what al-Bukhari narrated in his Sahih from Abu Juhayfa (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said:
The Prophet (ﷺ) forbade the acceptance of the price of a dog or blood, and also forbade the profession of tattooing, getting tattooed and receiving or giving Riba, (usury), and cursed the picture-makers.نهى النبي ﷺ عن ثمن الكلب وثمن الدم، ونهى عن الواشمة والموشومة وآكل الربا وموكله، ولعن المصور
Sahih al-Bukhari 2086
, and among these is also what is established in the two Sahihs from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
the most grievously tormented people on the Day of Resurrection would be the painters of picturesأشد الناس عذابًا يوم القيامة المصورون
Sahih Muslim 2109a
, and his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
The makers of these images will be punished on the Day of Resurrection, and it will be said to them: 'Bring to life that which you have created.'إن أصحاب هذه الصور يعذبون يوم القيامة، ويقال لهم: أحيوا ما خلقتم
Sunan an-Nasa'i 5362Sahih (Darussalam)
, to mention of other numerous hadiths established on this topic, and no one is excepted from this except one for whom dire necessity calls for drawing; due to the saying of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He):
while He has explained in detail to you what He has forbidden you, excepting that to which you are compelledوَقَدْ فَصَّلَ لَكُمْ مَا حَرَّمَ عَلَيْكُمْ إِلَّا مَا اضْطُرِرْتُمْ إِلَيْهِ
[Al-An'am 6:119]
the verse [al-An'am: 119].
I ask Allah to guide the Muslims to hold fast to the Shari'ah of their Lord and to adhere to the Sunnah of their Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and to beware of what contradicts that; He is the best of those asked.
