All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
He (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Chapter on the permissibility of drinking from all pure vessels other than gold and silver. Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The time for prayer arrived, so those who lived nearby went to their homes, and a group remained. A stone mortar was brought to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), but the mortar was too small for him to spread his hand in it, so all the people performed ablution from it. They asked: How many of you were there? He said: Eighty and more. Agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim. This is al-Bukhari’s narration. In a narration by him and Muslim: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked for a vessel of water, and a *rihrah* cup containing some water was brought to him, so he placed his fingers in it. Anas said: I kept looking at the water gushing forth from between his fingers, and I estimated that those who performed ablution were between seventy and eighty. And Abdullah ibn Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us, so we brought out water for him in a brass basin, and he performed ablution. Narrated by al-Bukhari. And Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) entered the home of a man from the Ansar, and he had a companion with him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
If you have water kept overnight in a water skin, (give us), otherwise we will drink water by putting our mouth in it. إن كان عندك ماء بات هذه الليلة في شنة وإلا كرعنا
Sahih al-Bukhari 5613
Narrated by al-Bukhari. And Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade us from silk, *diibaj* (satin), and drinking from gold and silver vessels, and he said:
They are for them in this world and for you in the Hereafter. هي لهم في الدنيا وهي لكم في الآخرة
Sunan Ibn Majah 3414Sahih (Darussalam)
Agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim. And Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
This chapter was established by the author, al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him), in *Riyad al-Saliheen*, in the chapter on vessels, regarding the ruling on vessels and their use for drinking. Know that there is a beneficial rule: the original ruling for everything Allah created on earth is that it is lawful; its original state is permissibility, except for that which evidence has established as forbidden. The evidence for this is the saying of Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He:
It is He who created for you all of that which is on the earth هو الذي خلق لكم ما في الأرض جميعًا
[Al-Baqarah 2:29]
Everything on earth is ours, whether animals, trees, or stones, and everything else. Everything on earth is lawful, made lawful by Allah for us, except for that which evidence has established as forbidden. Based on this great rule which Allah has explained to us in His Book, anyone who claims that something is forbidden must provide evidence. If someone says, for example, that this animal is forbidden, we say: bring the evidence, otherwise the original ruling is that it is lawful. If someone says this vessel is forbidden, we say: bring the evidence, otherwise the original ruling is that it is lawful. If someone says this tree is forbidden, we say: bring the evidence, otherwise the original ruling is that it is lawful. Because the one who says it is lawful has a foundation from Allah, Mighty and Majestic:
It is He who created for you all of that which is on the earth هو الذي خلق لكم ما في الأرض جميعًا
[Al-Baqarah 2:29]
And He, Mighty and Majestic, said:
And He has subjected to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth - all from Him وسخر لكم مافي السماوات ومافي الأرض جميعًا منه
[Al-Jathiyah 45:13]
He has subjected to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth - all from Him سخر لكم ما في السماوات وما في الأرض جميعًا منه
[Al-Jathiyah 45:13]
. This is the original ruling. Therefore, the author (may Allah have mercy on him) titled the chapter: The permissibility of drinking from vessels made of wood, stone, or other materials, except for gold and silver, for eating and drinking from gold and silver are not permissible.
