Benefits of the Hadith (Do not drink from vessels of gold and silver . . . ).
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : In this hadith, there are benefits: First: The prohibition of vessels of gold and silver, because the original ruling in a prohibition is that it is forbidden, and because the hadith indicates that whoever eats or drinks from them is deserving of being deprived of them in the Hereafter, for Allah has not permitted that to us except in the Hereafter.
And among the benefits of this hadith: There is no difference between large or small vessels, or between eating a lot or drinking a little, even if it is a sip of water in a spoon, it is forbidden, and likewise, if it is a single bite in a spoon, it is forbidden. Why? Because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih Muslim 1337b So we avoid all eating and all drinking; we do not eat, neither a little nor a lot, neither from large vessels nor small vessels.
And among the benefits of this hadith: The excellence of the Messenger’s (peace and blessings be upon him) teaching, which is done by mentioning the cause when mentioning the ruling, because mentioning the cause brings tranquility and stability to the heart, and it also clarifies the nobility of the Shari'ah, that there is no ruling in it except that it is accompanied by wisdom, and this is among the best teaching and the clearest explanation.
And among the benefits of the hadith: The permissibility of using vessels of gold and silver for other than eating and drinking, because the prohibition is only regarding eating and drinking. So if a person uses vessels of gold and silver for medicines he stores, or for dirhams, or for any need other than eating and drinking, there is nothing wrong with it. This is because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) was the most eloquent of people, the most sincere of people, and the most knowledgeable of people. If all usage had been forbidden, he would have used a general expression so that the matter would not remain ambiguous. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) does not speak words and leave them ambiguous for people; he must mention... the speech regarding the cause mentioned by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the hadith, which is a slip of the tongue.

The Shaykh : The minor causes are the three causes, as for the cause mentioned by the Messenger, it is the wise cause. Yes, I say that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) was the most eloquent of creation, the most sincere of creation, and the most knowledgeable of creation. If using gold and silver for other than eating and drinking had been forbidden, the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) would have clarified it clearly so that no ambiguity would remain. Then, the statement of Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him): "I inform you that I have forbidden him to give me drink from it" indicates that Hudhayfah had this vessel with him, but he did not use it for eating or drinking, and this is clear. And it is not permissible for us at all, when the Lawgiver mentions something specific, to generalize it, because that means we have restricted what the Lawgiver expanded. It is known that we worship according to what the Book and the Sunnah indicate, and we do not restrict it to the worship of Allah.
And here there are three matters: acquiring and using for other than eating and drinking, and using for eating and drinking. Using for eating and drinking is forbidden, or is it lawful? It is forbidden, there is no doubt in it, and indeed the apparent text indicates that it is among the major sins. As for acquiring, the disagreement in it is known, meaning that a person acquires it either as adornment or for one of the reasons, but does not use it; this disagreement in it is known. As for using, some people have reported that the scholars agreed on the prohibition, but this is not correct; there is no consensus on it. Al-Shawkani (may Allah have mercy on him) denied this greatly in "Nail al-Awtar" and said: The Sunnah indicates that what is forbidden is only eating and drinking, and analogy is prohibited and not valid. And what Al-Shawkani (may Allah have mercy on him) held is what the evidence indicates, that what is forbidden is using them for eating and drinking. And it will come to us in the hadith of Umm Salama the prohibition of drinking from a silver vessel, and that she (may Allah be pleased with her) acquired a silver bell, which will come to us, if Allah wills, in the next lesson.
