And the evidence for this is the hadith of Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman and Umm Salimah (may Allah be pleased with them both)

The Shaykh : And the evidence for this is the hadith of Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman and Umm Salimah (may Allah be pleased with them both). As for the hadith of Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman, he (may Allah be pleased with him) explicitly stated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) forbade drinking from vessels of gold and silver. Likewise, the hadith of Umm Salimah, in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) explained the wisdom behind this, saying: “They are for them in this world”—meaning for the disbelievers—“and they are for you in the Hereafter.” The disbelievers in the Hereafter will be in the Fire of Hell, may Allah protect us from it. When they call for help and die of thirst, Allah the Exalted said:
And if they call for relief, they will be relieved with water like murky oil, which scalds [their] faces. Wretched is the drink, and evil is the resting place. إن يستغيثوا يغاثوا بماء كالمهل يشوي الوجوه بئس الشراب وساءت مرتفقًا
[Al-Kahf 18:29]
They will be given water like molten metal, which is like the foam of heated oil, may Allah protect us from it. When they bring it to their faces to drink from it, it will scorch their faces
and are given to drink scalding water that will sever their intestines? وسقوا ماءً حميمًا فقطع أمعاءهم
[Muhammad 47:15]
may Allah protect us from it. But the people of Paradise, may Allah make me and you among them,
(25) They will be given to drink [pure] wine [which was] sealed. (26) The last of it is musk. So for this let the competitors compete. يسقون من رحيق مختوم * ختامه مسك
[Al-Mutaffifin 83:25-26]
will be given to drink from vessels of gold and silver. Therefore, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade eating and drinking from them because they are the vessels of Paradise. He also forbade wearing silk because silk is for the believers in Paradise. It is not fitting for men to wear silk, and likewise for women, except that Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) granted them a dispensation to wear silk for the sake of their benefit and the benefit of their husbands, so that a woman may adorn herself for her husband, thereby achieving the benefit of all. Were it not for this, silk would be forbidden for women just as it is forbidden for men, because it is the clothing of the people of Paradise. The conclusion is that all vessels, whether of glass, pottery, wood, stone, or otherwise, are originally lawful, even if they are made of the most precious metals; they are lawful except for gold and silver. The operative cause of this ruling is not, as some jurists said, arrogance or breaking the hearts of the poor, or the like. If that were the case, then eating and drinking from any vessel that breaks the hearts of the poor would be forbidden. But the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) explained the operative cause:
They are for them in this world and for them in the Hereafter. إنها لهم في الدنيا ولهم في الآخرة
This is specific to vessels of gold and silver. If a person drinks from a vessel of a metal more precious than gold and silver, it would not be forbidden, provided it does not reach the level of extravagance. But if one eats or drinks from gold and silver, that is forbidden, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade it and explained the reason. In the hadith of Umm Salimah, there is evidence that eating and drinking from vessels of gold and silver is among the major sins, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) threatened that whoever does so is only pouring fire from Hell into his belly. “Jirjarah” is the sound of food and drink as it descends into the throat. So if one eats or drinks from a vessel of gold or silver, he is only pouring fire from Hell into his belly. This indicates that it is among the major sins, because there is a threat involved, and every sin that carries a threat is among the major sins. And Allah is the One who grants success.

The questioner : O Shaykh, what about vessels plated with gold and silver?
