Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : As for the second chapter, it is eating and drinking from vessels of gold and silver: Gold and silver are both minerals that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) created in the earth and created for us, as He the Exalted said: [Al-Baqarah 2:29], so we may benefit from gold and silver as we wish, except for what the Shari'ah has forbidden, , and refuge is sought in Allah. Al-jarjarah is the sound of water as it moves down the throat.
So this man, and refuge is sought in Allah, is given to drink from the Fire of Hell, may Allah grant us safety, until the sound gurgles in his belly as it gurgled in this world. This indicates that eating and drinking from gold and silver vessels is among the major sins, and that it is not permissible for a believer to do so.
As for using gold and silver for other purposes, this is a point of disagreement among the scholars: The majority of scholars say: "It is not permissible to use gold and silver vessels for anything other than eating and drinking, just as it is not permissible for eating and drinking", so it is not permissible to make them a storage place for medicine, or for dirhams, or for dinars, or the like,Mishkat al-Masabih 243 and anything else is the same.
Some of the scholars have permitted it and said: We restrict ourselves to what the text has brought, and the rest is not forbidden, because the original ruling is permissibility. For this reason, Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her), who is among those who narrated the hadith forbidding eating and drinking from silver vessels: "She had a silver jar—meaning like a Pepsi container or the like—a silver jar in which she placed some of the hair of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and people would seek healing with it". When a person became ill, they would come to her, and she would put water in this jar and swirl it in the hair, and the sick person would drink it and be healed by the permission of Allah. So she (may Allah be pleased with her) used silver for other than eating and drinking. This is closer to the truth: that using gold and silver for other than eating and drinking is permissible, but scrupulousness is to leave it off as a precaution to conform to the majority of scholars, and success is from Allah.
It is He who created for you all of that which is on the earth
هو الذي خلق لكم ما في الأرض جميعاAnd the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade eating and drinking from gold and silver vessels, and informed that they are for the disbelievers in this world and for us in the Hereafter, and informed that the one who eats and drinks from silver vessels is merely pouring the Fire of Hell into his belly
So this man, and refuge is sought in Allah, is given to drink from the Fire of Hell, may Allah grant us safety, until the sound gurgles in his belly as it gurgled in this world. Mu'awiya said that the Prophet forbade the discussion of thorny questions. Abu Dawud transmitted it.
