The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) established these two chapters in the Book of Clothing. The first chapter is on the recommendation of abandoning fine clothing out of humility for Allah (Mighty and Majestic), and the second is on moderation in clothing. As for the first, it is narrated from Mu'adh ibn Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
Whoever abandons clothing من ترك اللباس
meaning: fine, good clothing
out of humility for Allah (Mighty and Majestic), then Allah the Exalted will call him on the Day when the witnesses stand, before the heads of the creation, letting him choose from which of the garments of faith he wishes. تواضعًا لله عز وجل، فإن الله تعالى يناديه يوم يقوم الأشهاد على رؤوس الخلائق يخيره من أي لباس الإيمان شاء
This means that if a person is among people of moderate means who cannot afford fine clothing, he should be humble and wear clothing like theirs so that their hearts are not broken and so that he does not boast over them. In that case, he attains this great reward. However, if he is among people whom Allah has blessed and who wear fine clothing that is not forbidden, then it is better for him to wear like them, because Allah the Exalted is beautiful and loves beauty. Undoubtedly, if a person is among people of high status who wear beautiful clothing and he wears less than them, this is considered clothing for showing off. A person should look at what the situation requires. If abandoning fine clothing is out of humility for Allah and to show solidarity with the people around him, then he has this great reward. But if he is among people whom Allah has made wealthy and who wear fine clothing, then he should wear like them.
