Al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said in his book *Riyad al-Salihin*, in the book of clothing: "Chapter on the prohibition of wearing silk for men, and spreading it out and leaning against it". These are three matters: wearing silk, spreading it out, and leaning against it. The author has affirmed that this is forbidden for men, and that is due to the hadiths he cited from 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, Ali ibn Abi Talib, Anas ibn Malik, Abu Musa al-Ash'ari, and Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman (may Allah be pleased with them). All of them indicate the prohibition of wearing gold and silver, and the prohibition of men wearing silk. In the hadith of 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), it states thatSunan an-Nasa'i 5305Sahih (Darussalam) This is a warning that indicates that wearing silk for men is among the major sins, because it contains a warning regarding the Hereafter, and every sin that contains a warning regarding the Hereafter is a major sin according to the scholars. There is no difference whether it is a shirt, trousers, an undershirt, a headscarf, a cap, or anything else that is worn; all of this is forbidden for men. It is not permissible for men to wear any silk, whether a little or a lot. In the hadith of Ali, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took gold and silk in his hands and said: Sunan Ibn Majah 3595Sahih (Darussalam) The wisdom in that is that a woman needs to adorn herself for her husband, so gold and silk were made lawful for her. As for the man, he has no need for that, so wearing gold and silk was forbidden for him. In the hadith of 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), it states that whoever wears it, or that Sunan Ibn Majah 3591Sahih (Darussalam) meaning: he who has no share in the Hereafter. For this reason, some scholars held that if a person wears silk in this world, he will not enter Paradise, may Allah protect us from that, because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sunan Ibn Majah 3591Sahih (Darussalam) meaning: he has no share. He also said: Sunan an-Nasa'i 5305Sahih (Darussalam) and this means that he will not enter Paradise. Some scholars said: Rather, he will enter it, but he will not enjoy wearing silk, even though the clothing of the people of Paradise is silk; he will wear something else. This is if he does not repent. If he repents from his sins, Allah forgives the repentant person his sin, as Allah the Exalted said: [Az-Zumar 39:53] This applies to natural silk that comes from silkworms. As for artificial silk, it is not forbidden, but it is not recommended for a man to wear it because of the softness it entails and the lowering of the status of a man, who should be rough and wear masculine clothes, not clothes of softness.
He (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Chapter on the prohibition of wearing silk for men, and the prohibition of sitting on it and leaning against it. From 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Do not wear silk (clothes). For whoever wears (them) in this life will be deprived of them in the Hereafter.
لا تلبسوا الحرير فإن من لبسه في الدنيا لم يلبسه في الآخرةSilk is only worn by one who has no share.
إنما يلبس الحرير من لا خلاق لهone who has no share in the Hereafter
من لا خلاق له في الآخرةWhoever wears it in this world will not wear it in the Hereafter.
من لبس الحرير الدنيا لم يلبسه في الآخرةThese two are forbidden for the males of my Ummah.
إن هذين حرام على ذكور أمتيWearing silk and gold has made unlawful for the males of my Ummah and lawful for its females.
