Explanation of Riyad al-Salihin-62a

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: The author (may Allah have mercy on him) transmitted in the context of the hadiths in the chapter on the virtue of reciting the Qur'an: "Narrated by 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
By this Book, Allah would exalt some peoples and degrade others.
Sahih Muslim 817a
Narrated by Muslim.
And narrated by Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) who said:
Envy is not justified but in case of two persons only: one who, having been given (knowledge of) the Qur'an by Allah, recites it during the night and day (and also acts upon it) and a man who, having been given wealth by God, spends it during the night and the day (for the welfare of others. seeking the pleasure of the Lord).
Sahih Muslim 815a
Agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim"
.

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
The author al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said in his book *Riyad al-Salihin* in the chapter on the virtue of reciting the Qur'an:
In what he transmitted from the Commander of the Faithful, 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
By this Book, Allah would exalt some peoples and degrade others.
Sahih Muslim 817a
: Meaning, its significance is that this Qur'an is taken up by people who recite and read it, and among them are those whom Allah raises with it in this world and the Hereafter, and among them are those whom Allah lowers with it in this world and the Hereafter. So who is this one and who is that one?
The one who acts upon this Qur'an by believing in its reports, executing its commands, avoiding its prohibitions, following its guidance, and adopting the character traits it contains, all of which are noble character traits, then Allah the Exalted will raise him with it in this world and the Hereafter. This is because this Qur'an is the origin of knowledge, the source of knowledge, and all knowledge. And Allah the Exalted said:
Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees
[Al-Mujadila 58:11]
.
As for the Hereafter, Allah raises with it some people in the Gardens of Pleasure, raising their ranks in the Gardens of Pleasure, and it is said to the reciter:
Read and recite with measured recitation and ascend
: And for him is an ascent in Paradise up to the limit of his recitation. We ask Allah of His bounty.
As for those whom Allah lowers with it: they are a group who recite it and beautify its recitation, but they are arrogant toward it, refuge sought in Allah. They do not believe in its reports nor act upon its rulings. They are arrogant toward it in action and deny it in report. When something from the Qur'an comes to them, whether stories about the previous prophets or others, or about the Day of Judgment or the like, they become, refuge sought in Allah, doubting of it and do not believe. Rather, there is a disease in their hearts, they are in doubt, refuge sought in Allah. And perhaps their condition reaches to denial, even though he reads the Qur'an. And in the rulings, they are arrogant toward its rulings: they do not stand by His command nor refrain from His prohibition. These people, refuge sought in Allah, are lowered by Allah in this world and in the Hereafter, and their affair must be one of loss. Even if it were assumed that the world adorned itself for them and became ornate, their end is loss, refuge sought in Allah. But perhaps he is given respite and they are granted delay, and the world opens up to them. But whenever something of the adornment of the world opens up to them, they do not increase thereby except in loss, refuge sought in Allah.
And the Day those who disbelieved are exposed to the Fire [it will be said], "You exhausted your pleasures during your worldly life and enjoyed them, so this Day you will be awarded the punishment of [extreme] humiliation because you were arrogant upon the earth without right and because you were defiantly disobedient."
[Al-Ahqaf 46:20]
: Meaning, perhaps Allah the Exalted grants respite to the disbeliever, the denier, the arrogant, and the world adorns itself for him, but that does not increase him except in sin and loss in the Hereafter, refuge sought in Allah. So beware, beware, of being among the second group whom Allah the Exalted lowers with this Qur'an. Be among the first group whom Allah the Exalted raises with the Qur'an. May Allah make us and you among them.
