Explanation of Riyad al-Salihin-62a

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reader: The author (may Allah have mercy on him) transmitted, in the context of the hadiths in the chapter on the virtue of reciting the Qur'an: "From al-Bara' ibn 'Azib (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said:
A man was reciting Surat al-Kahf, and he had a horse tied with two ropes. A cloud covered him and began to descend, and his horse began to shy away from it. When morning came, he went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and mentioned this to him. He said: That is the tranquility that descended for the Qur'an
Agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim.
And from Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever recites a letter from the Book of Allah, he will be credited with a good deed, and a good deed gets a ten-fold reward. I do not say that Alif-Lam-Mim is one letter, but Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter and Mim is a letter.
Riyad as-Salihin 999
Al-Tirmidhi narrated it and said: A good, authentic hadith "
.

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
The author al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned in his book *Riyad al-Salihin*, in the chapter on the virtue of reciting the Qur'an, what indicates the virtue of reciting the Qur'an from the preceding and following hadiths. Among them is:
The hadith of al-Bara' ibn 'Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man was reciting in Surat al-Kahf. Surat al-Kahf is the surah between Surat al-Isra and Maryam. Among the virtues of this surah is that if a person recites it on Friday, light will illuminate for him between the two Fridays. It contains stories and lessons that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) related to His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him and his family).
This man was reciting the Qur'an when it covered him: meaning something like a canopy covered him, as if it were a cloud. Every time he recited, it would descend; every time he recited, it would descend from above. And the horse, which was tied with two ropes, began to lean and shy away from what it saw. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) was informed, he said:
That is the tranquility that descended for the recitation of the Qur'an
: Because the tranquility descends when the Qur'an is recited, if a person recites it with deliberation and reflection. The tranquility descends until it reaches the heart of the reciter, and Allah sends the tranquility into his heart. This story is among the miracles (karamat) of the awliya (close friends of Allah). The awliya have miracles, but not every wali has a miracle; rather, Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) grants some of His awliya a miracle to confirm them and to verify the truth upon which they were. These miracles are matters that transcend the norm, meaning they do not occur according to the norm; they are extraordinary, and Allah (Mighty and Majestic) performs them through the hands of some of His awliya as an honor for them, a confirmation for them, and a verification of the truth upon which they are. At the same time, they are a prophetic miracle (mu'jizah) for the Prophet whom this wali follows. The scholars (may Allah have mercy on them) mentioned: "The extraordinary matters are of three categories, meaning the things that go beyond the norm are divided into three categories:
A category of signs for the prophets, a category of miracles (karamat) for the awliya, and a category of humiliations from the devils, which Allah performs contrary to the norm through the hands of the devils, refuge with Allah from that "
. And the sign of that is that the one for whom these extraordinary matters occur is either a prophet, or a wali of al-Rahman, or a wali of Satan.
It is known that after the death of our Messenger Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), it is impossible for a miracle (karamah) to be a prophetic miracle (mu'jizah) ever, because prophethood has been cut off,
but [he is] the Messenger of Allah and last of the prophets
[Al-Ahzab 33:40]
.
The miracles (karamat) remain, and the satanic states, sorcery, and the like remain.
The sign of the miracles (karamat) is that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) performs them through the hand of a righteous man from the awliya of Allah. The awliya of Allah are the believers who are mindful of Allah, as He the Exalted said:
(62) Unquestionably, [for] the allies of Allah there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve (63) Those who believed and were fearing Allah
[Yunus 10:62-63]
: So if something extraordinary occurs through the hand of a righteous, believing, mindful man known for good, it is said: This is a miracle (karamah).
The third category: sorcery and satanic states. These occur through the tyrants and the awliya of Satan, who claim to be awliya and play with the minds of the foolish and the common people. You find a man enlarging his turban, widening his sleeve, lengthening his beard, and rubbing his forehead on the ground to show the mark of prostration, and the like of playing with people's minds. Then he uses the devils for his private purposes, and they serve him, bringing the far near, and perhaps carrying him in the air and flying in the air, until some of them were seen in their house on the first day of 'Arafah, and then the devils carried them until they reached the people at 'Arafah.
