The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions:
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) transmitted, in the context of the hadiths in the chapter on encouraging the recitation of specific surahs and verses: "It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Do not make your houses as graveyards. Satan runs away from the house in which Surah Baqara is recited.
Sahih Muslim 780
Narrated by Muslim.
And it was narrated from Ubayy ibn Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Abu Mundhir! Do you know which Ayah in Allah's Book is the greatest?" I replied: "It is 'Allah la ilaha illa Huwal-Haiyul-Qayum (Allah! none has the right to be worshipped but He, the Ever Living...)'." (2:256) Thereupon he (ﷺ) patted me in the chest and said, "Rejoice by this knowledge, O Abu Mundhir!"
Riyad as-Salihin 1019
Narrated by Muslim"

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
These are hadiths explaining the virtue of certain verses or surahs from the Noble Qur'an, including Surat al-Baqarah:
Regarding Surat al-Baqarah, the author (may Allah have mercy on him) transmitted from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
Do not turn your houses into graves
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2877Sahih (Darussalam)
The scholars said: "The meaning of this is: do not leave prayer in them": meaning, pray in your homes. The reason he called the absence of prayer in homes "graveyards" is that he called homes graveyards if no prayer is performed in them, because prayer is not valid in a graveyard. As came in the hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
All of the earth is a Masjid except for the graveyard and the washroom.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 317Sahih (Darussalam)
, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Do not pray toward graves and do not sit on them.
Sunan an-Nasa'i 760Sahih (Darussalam)
.
Therefore, in a graveyard, voluntary prayer, obligatory prayer, the prostration of recitation, the prostration of gratitude, or any other form of prayer is not valid, except for one prayer: the funeral prayer. If a funeral prayer is performed in a graveyard, there is no harm, whether that is before burial or after burial. However, after burial, it is not performed during the prohibited times. For example, if you come to attend a funeral after the 'Asr prayer and find that they have already buried the deceased, do not pray over them, because you can pray at another time other than the prohibited time, such as the Duha time. But if you come and they have not buried them, but the body has been placed in the ground for burial, there is no harm in praying over them even if it is after 'Asr, because in this case it is a prayer with a cause, and a prayer with a cause has no prohibited time.
Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) informed:
Satan runs away from the house in which Surah Baqara is recited.
Sahih Muslim 780
The reason is that Surat al-Baqarah contains the Verse of the Throne. And what indicates this is the hadith following the one mentioned by the author: the hadith of Ubayy ibn Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him):
That the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him which verse in the Book of Allah is the greatest? He said: The Verse of the Throne. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) struck his chest and said: "May knowledge bring you joy, O Abu al-Mundhir" أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم سأله أيَّ آية في كتاب الله أعظم ؟
: meaning, he congratulated him for knowing that the greatest verse in the Book of Allah is the Verse of the Throne, because this verse contains ten attributes of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). He (Mighty and Majestic) says:
Allah - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence
[Al-Baqarah 2:255]
In this is the pure oneness of Allah (Mighty and Majestic).
Allah, there is no deity except Him
So all objects of worship other than Allah are worshipped without truth, even if they are called gods, they are only names they have given them, and Allah has not sent down any authority for that.
the Ever-Living, the Self-Subsisting الحي القيوم
: meaning, the Perfect in His life and His self-subsistence. So He is the Ever-Living, perfect in His life. Non-existence did not precede His life, and extinction does not follow it, because He is the First, before whom there is nothing, and the Last, after whom there is nothing. Allah (Mighty and Majestic) said:
(26) Everyone upon the earth will perish, (27) And there will remain the Face of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honor.
[Ar-Rahman 55:26-27]
: Some of the Salaf said: "It is recommended for the one who recites this verse
Everyone upon the earth will perish,
[Ar-Rahman 55:26]
not to stop, but to say
(26) Everyone upon the earth will perish, (27) And there will remain the Face of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honor.
[Ar-Rahman 55:26-27]
so that by that the deficiency of the created beings and the perfection of the Creator (Exalted and Majestic is He) become clear"
. So He (Glorified and Exalted is He) is the Ever-Living, perfect in His life. Likewise, His life is not followed by any deficiency in any way, and the life of everyone else is all deficiency. Look at your life, you human being: if you have hearing, your hearing is deficient; you do not hear everything. Sight is likewise, health is likewise. How many diseases afflict people! And so the rest of the attributes of life are deficient. But the Lord (Mighty and Majestic) is perfect in life.
The meaning of al-Qayyum (the Self-Subsisting) is: "The One who subsists by Himself and the One who subsists over others": meaning, the meaning of "subsists by Himself" is that He does not need anyone (Mighty and Majestic):
But whoever disbelieves - then indeed, Allah is free from need of the worlds.
[Ali 'Imran 3:97]
,
If you disbelieve - indeed, Allah is Free from need of you. And He does not approve for His servants disbelief. And if you are grateful, He approves it for you
[Az-Zumar 39:7]
He is Self-Sufficient. And in the Qudsi hadith, He (Exalted and Majestic is He) said:
you will not attain harming Me so as to harm Me, and will not attain benefitting Me so as to benefit Me
Sahih Muslim 2577a
: so He subsists by Himself and does not need anyone. "Subsists over others": everyone other than Him, the One who subsists over them is Allah (Mighty and Majestic). Allah the Exalted said:
Then is He who is a maintainer of every soul, [knowing] what it has earned
[Ar-Ra'd 13:33]
: meaning, like one who owns nothing! And the One who subsists over every soul for what it has earned is Allah (Mighty and Majestic).
So what are the two meanings of al-Qayyum? Sami!
Subsisting over others, subsisting by Himself: meaning, He does not need anyone. Subsisting over others: meaning, everything needs Allah (Mighty and Majestic).
Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep.
[Al-Baqarah 2:255]
Al-Sinah: drowsiness, which is the precursor to sleep, and sleep is well known. Allah (Mighty and Majestic) is not overtaken by drowsiness or sleep. But a human being is overtaken by drowsiness and sleep, whether he chooses it or not. Sometimes a person sleeps while praying and cannot help it. He dozes off while talking to people and cannot help it. But the Lord (Mighty and Majestic) is not overtaken by drowsiness or sleep due to the perfection of His life (Glorified and Exalted is He) and the perfection of His self-subsistence.
And in the authentic hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), he said:
Verily Allah does not sleep and it does not befit Him to sleep
Sahih Muslim 179c
: He does not sleep, and it is not befitting for Him to sleep: meaning, it is impossible to the utmost degree of impossibility that He (Mighty and Majestic) should sleep, because He is perfect in life and perfect in self-subsistence. Who would sustain the creation if the Creator slept?! No one. So He (Exalted and Majestic is He) is not overtaken by drowsiness or sleep. And the rest of the discussion on this verse will come, if Allah wills. And Allah knows best.
