Explanation of Riyad al-Salihin-66a

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: The author (may Allah have mercy on him) transmitted, in the context of the hadiths in the chapter on the command to maintain the prescribed prayers and the severe prohibition and warning against abandoning them: "Narrated by Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Indeed the first deed by which a servant will be called to account on the Day of Resurrection is his Salat. If it is complete, he is successful and saved, but if it is defective, he has failed and lost. So if something is deficient in his obligatory (prayers) then the Lord, Mighty and Sublime says: 'Look! Are there any voluntary (prayers) for my worshipper?' So with them, what was deficient in his obligatory (prayers) will be completed. Then the rest of his deeds will be treated like that.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 413Sahih (Darussalam)
Al-Tirmidhi narrated it and said: It is a good hadith"
.

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
This is the last hadith in the chapter on the virtue of prayer and the severe warning against those who abandon it, and the firm prohibition:
It contains the fact that the first thing a servant will be held accountable for from his deeds on the Day of Resurrection is prayer, and this is with regard to the right of Allah, Mighty and Majestic,
So the first thing a servant will be held accountable for is prayer. If it is sound, he will have succeeded and prospered. فأول ما يُحاسب عليه العبد الصلاة فإن صلحت فقد أفلح ونجح
, otherwise, the opposite is the case: he will have failed and lost, may Allah protect us from that.
As for the rights of human beings, the first thing settled between people is blood, because it is the greatest of rights. Blood means killing, then the rest of the reckoning follows for what remains.
But when Allah, Mighty and Majestic, holds a servant accountable for his prayer and it is sound, he succeeds and prospers; otherwise, he fails and loses. Then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, commands that his deeds be examined: does he have any voluntary prayers? If so, they will complete the obligatory ones. For this reason, it is among the favor, mercy, grace, and kindness of Allah that He prescribed for us voluntary prayers after the obligatory prayers, before them, and at all times, except for the times when prayer is prohibited, the times when prayer is forbidden. This is because a person must inevitably have some deficiency in his prayer, and this deficiency is completed by these voluntary prayers. Thus, Zuhr has four rak'ahs before it and two rak'ahs after it. The four rak'ahs before it are with two taslims, and the two rak'ahs after it. Asr prayer has no rawatib, but it has an absolute sunnah, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Between every two calls (to prayer) there is a Salat بين كل أذانين صلاة
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 185Sahih (Darussalam)
.
Maghrib prayer has a rawatib after it and an absolute sunnah before it. The rawatib after it is two rak'ahs.
Isha' prayer has two rak'ahs after it.
Fajr prayer has two rak'ahs before it.
Night prayer, the witr prayer, the duha prayer, all these voluntary prayers increase the reward of the one who prays, and they complete the deficiency that occurred in the prayers. This is among the blessings of Allah, Mighty and Majestic. We ask Allah to help us and you to remember Him, thank Him, and worship Him well.
