Chapter on the virtue of fasting and other acts of worship in the first ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
These three chapters that al-Nawawi established in his book *Riyad al-Salihin* regarding the days on which it is recommended to fast:
Among them, meaning among what is recommended to fast, are the ten days, the first ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah. For the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
There are no days during which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these days ما مِن أيام العمل الصالح فيها أحبُّ إلى الله من هذه الأيام
Sunan Ibn Majah 1727Sahih (Darussalam)
meaning the ten days. And his statement:
Righteous deeds العمل الصالح
: includes prayer, charity, fasting, dhikr, takbir, reciting the Qur'an, dutifulness to parents, maintaining family ties, excellence in worship toward creation, good neighborliness, and other things, all righteous deeds.
There are no days during which the righteous action is so pleasing to Allah than these days (i.e., the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah)." He was asked: "O Messenger of Allah, not even Jihad in the Cause of Allah?" He (ﷺ) replied, "Not even Jihad in the Cause of Allah, except in case one goes forth with his life and his property and does not return with either of it." ما من أيام -في السنة- يكون العمل فيها يكون العمل الصالح فيها أحب إلى الله من هذه الأيام العشر ، قالوا : ولا الجهاد في سبيل الله ؟ قال : ولا الجهاد في سبيل الله ، إلا رجل خرج بنفسه وماله فلم يرجع من ذلك بشيء
Riyad as-Salihin 1249
: In this is evidence of the virtue of righteous deeds in the first ten days of the month of Dhu al-Hijjah, whether fasting or otherwise.
And in it is also evidence that jihad is among the best of deeds. For this reason, the Companions said:
Jihad (i.e. holy battles) ولا الجهاد في سبيل الله
Sahih al-Bukhari 2548
.
And in it is evidence of the virtue of this rare state where a person goes out as a mujahid in the path of Allah with his own self and his wealth, and his wealth means his weapon and his mount, and then he is killed and his weapon and mount are taken, taken by the enemy. So he has lost his life and his wealth in the path of Allah, and he is among the best of the mujahideen. This is better than righteous deeds in the ten days. And if this deed occurs in the ten days, its virtue is multiplied.
