What is prescribed in the ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Let us review what is prescribed specifically in these days. We say that the remembrance of Allah is prescribed in them, based on the saying of Allah the Exalted:
and mention the name of Allah on known days over what He has provided for them of [sacrificial] animals
[Al-Hajj 22:28]
The known days are the ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah. One should increase in remembrance during them, including the takbir, tahlil, and tahmid. You say: Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illa Allah, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, wa lillah al-hamd. You should say this frequently, aloud in the mosques, in the markets, and in the homes. Perhaps your remembrance in the homes serves as a protection for your home from the jinn and Shayatins, because Allah described the Shayatins and jinn as those who retreat; they retreat and hide and move away when Allah is mentioned. Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illa Allah, wa Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, wa lillah al-hamd, at all times, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to remember Allah in all his states. Also prescribed is fasting these ten days, except for the day of the festival, for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to fast them, as narrated by Imam Ahmad and the authors of the Sunan from Hafsa bint 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with them both):
That the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not leave fasting them.
Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 25:305
This is the stronger position. As for the hadith of 'Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) in *Muslim*:
That the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used not to fast in the ten days.
the scholars said that if two trustworthy men contradict each other, one affirming and the other denying, the one who affirms is given precedence, because he has additional knowledge. It is possible that the denial of 'Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) is a denial of knowledge, not a denial of reality. With this, we reconcile the two hadiths. Furthermore, even if the hadith of Hafsa were not preserved, fasting is among the best of righteous deeds. Fasting is among the best of righteous deeds, so it falls under his saying:
There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than those ten days.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 757Sahih (Darussalam)
Also recommended in these days is traveling to the House of Allah the Sacred to perform 'Umrah and Hajj. This is the best of what is done specifically in these days, meaning that the best of the specific deeds in these days is traveling to the House of Allah to perform 'Umrah and Hajj. Hajj is a type of jihad in the path of Allah. 'Aisha asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Is there jihad for women? He said: For them is a jihad in which there is no fighting: Hajj and 'Umrah.
This is indicated by the saying of Allah the Mighty and Majestic:
(195) And spend in the way of Allah and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction [by refraining]. And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good. (196) And complete the Hajj and 'umrah for Allah. But if you are prevented, then [offer] what can be obtained with ease of sacrificial animals. And do not shave your heads until the sacrificial animal has reached its place of slaughter. And whoever among you is ill or has an ailment of the head [making shaving necessary must offer] a ransom of fasting [three days] or charity or sacrifice. And when you are secure, then whoever performs 'umrah [during the Hajj months] followed by Hajj [offers] what can be obtained with ease of sacrificial animals. And whoever cannot find [or afford such an animal] - then a fast of three days during Hajj and of seven when you have returned [home]. Those are ten complete [days]. This is for those whose family is not in the area of al-Masjid al-Haram. And fear Allah and know that Allah is severe in penalty.
[Al-Baqarah 2:195-196]
The completion of Hajj and 'Umrah is conjoined with spending in the path of Allah, which suggests that Hajj is a type of jihad in the path of Allah. Accordingly, it is fitting for us to speak, even briefly, about Hajj and 'Umrah. Also, among what is done in these ten days, in their last day, is drawing near to Allah with the sacrificial animal (udhiyah). Drawing near to Allah with the sacrificial animal is for those who do not perform Hajj, for Muslims in their lands. As for the pilgrims, what is prescribed for them is the hady, because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) offered hady in his Hajj and did not sacrifice an udhiyah, and he sacrificed an udhiyah in Medina in a year other than his year of Hajj.
