The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
This chapter: "Chapter on one who breaks the fast of a fasting person": This is the last thing al-Nawawi -may Allah have mercy on him- mentioned in his book *Riyad al-Salihin* regarding fasting.
And that is because among the blessings of Allah the Exalted and Supreme upon His servants is that He prescribed for them cooperation in righteousness and piety.
And among that is breaking the fast of the fasting person, because the fasting person is commanded to break his fast and to hasten the breaking of the fast, so if he is helped in this, it is from the blessing of Allah the Mighty and Majestic. For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever breaks the fast of a fasting person has a reward like his, without anything being deducted from the reward of the fasting person مَن فطَّر صائما فله مثل أجره من غير أن ينقص من أجر الصائم شيء
.
The scholars differed regarding the meaning of his saying:
Whoever breaks the fast of a fasting person مَن فطَّر صائما

And some scholars said: The meaning of breaking his fast is that he satisfies him, because this is what benefits the fasting person throughout his night, and perhaps he will be satisfied with it and not need the pre-dawn meal. However, the apparent meaning of the hadith is that if a person breaks the fast of a fasting person, even with a single date, he has a reward like his. For this reason, a person should strive to break the fasts of those who are fasting to the best of his ability, especially given the need of the fasting people and their poverty, or their need because there is no one in their homes to prepare the breaking of the fast for them, and the like of that.
