The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said in his book *Riyad al-Salihin*:"Chapter on the Virtue of Generosity in Buying and Selling"Buying and selling are two necessities without which the life of the children of Adam would generally not be established. This is because a person may need something from another; how would he obtain it if he begged for it and said, "Give it to me"? He would humiliate himself. If he borrowed it, he would remain in anxiety. If he took it by force, he would be unjust. So, from the wisdom of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) is that He legislated buying and selling. For example, I may need dirhams, so I sell what I have, and you need this specific item I have, so you buy it with dirhams. Thus, selling is a necessity for the needs of the children of Adam. However, some people sell with justice, some sell with injustice, and some sell with generosity. People are divided into three categories: a category that sells with justice, not oppressing and not being oppressed, as Allah the Exalted said regarding those who deal in riba (usury or interest):
But if you repent, you may have your principal - [thus] you do no wrong, nor are you wronged.
[Al-Baqarah 2:279]
And a group sells with injustice and oppression, such as the deceiver and the liar and the like of that. And a group sells with generosity and kindness, being lenient in selling and buying. If he sells, he does not demand his full right, but rather he reduces the price and gives time in payment. And if he buys, he does not mind if the price is increased, and he hastens to pay, thus being a doer of good. The author (may Allah have mercy on him) cited verses as evidence for the virtue of leniency in selling and buying, among which is the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And whatever you do of good - indeed, Allah is Knowing of it." وما تفعلوا من خير فإن الله به عليم
[Al-Baqarah 2:215]
The word "any good" is an indefinite noun in the context of a condition, so it encompasses all kinds of good from any source. It is also confirmed in its generality by the word "whoever,"
of good من خير
This means: whatever good you do, Allah is fully aware of it; that is, nothing is hidden from Him or escapes His notice (Mighty and Majestic), and He will reward you for it with something better than what you did, because Allah the Exalted rewards a good deed with ten times its like, up to seven hundred times, up to many times over. The intended meaning of this noble verse is to encourage the doing of good and to make the doer know that nothing of his deed will be lost, for Allah is fully aware of it and will reward him for it (Mighty and Majestic) with the best reward. Among the good is leniency in buying and selling. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed for those who are lenient in buying and selling, saying:
May Allah have mercy on a person who is generous when he sells, generous when he buys, generous when he pays, and generous when he demands payment.
Sunan al-Bayhaqi 5:520
The more generous a person is in his selling, buying, hiring, being hired, pledging, taking a pledge, and so on, the better he is. And Allah the Exalted said regarding Shu'ayb that he said to his people:
O my people, give full measure and weight in justice and do not deprive the people of their due
[Hud 11:85]
Fulfill the measure, meaning: what you sell by measure, and the scale, meaning: what you sell by weight; fulfill them and do not diminish anything from them. This is evidence that fulfilling contracts is something that the previous and subsequent heavenly laws have brought. And He the Exalted said:
(1) Woe to those who give less [than due], (2) Who, when they take a measure from people, take in full.
[Al-Mutaffifin 83:1-2]
Wail is a word of warning with which Allah (Mighty and Majestic) threatens the cheaters in measures, who are described as follows:
when they take a measure from people, take in full.
[Al-Mutaffifin 83:2]
That is: if the right belongs to them and they measure, they take their full right completely.
But if they give by measure or by weight to them, they cause loss.
[Al-Mutaffifin 83:3]
That is, if the right belongs to them and they measure or weigh for others, they shortchange them, meaning they cheat in the measure and the scale, thereby wronging them in both respects. Or, they demand justice in their own dealings but cheat in how they deal with people, and this is the one who shortchanges. Although this verse was revealed regarding the measure and the scale, it is general in application. Even an employee who wants to receive his full salary but delays in arriving or leaves early is among those who shortchange, whom Allah has threatened with wail. This is because there is no difference between a person who measures or weighs for people and an employee who is required to arrive at a specific time and not leave until a specific time, yet he delays in arriving and leaves early. Such a person is one who shortchanges. If this employee’s salary were reduced by even one real out of ten thousand, he would demand to know why it was reduced. He is one who shortchanges and falls under this threat.
(1) Woe to those who give less [than due], (2) Who, when they take a measure from people, take in full. (3) But if they give by measure or by weight to them, they cause loss.
[Al-Mutaffifin 83:1-3]
Then He, the Exalted, said, rebuking them:
(4) Do they not think that they will be resurrected (5) For a tremendous Day - ألا يظن أولئك أنهم مبعوثون * ليوم عظيم
[Al-Mutaffifin 83:4-5]
Does this mean that these people have forgotten the Day of Reckoning? Have they forgotten the Day of Resurrection, which is so near? A person in this worldly life has no guarantee of living even for a single moment. A person may die while having lunch or dinner, die while sleeping, die while at his desk, or die while going to attend to his needs or returning from them. Then comes the Great Day.
(4) Do they not think that they will be resurrected (5) For a tremendous Day - ألا يظن أولئك أنهم مبعوثون * ليوم عظيم
[Al-Mutaffifin 83:4-5]
Allah the Mighty and Majestic magnified it, indicating that it is great, which points to its greatness. Allah has described this day in many verses, all of which are disturbing, terrifying, and cause fear. These people will be exposed to the punishment of Allah on that day. These short-changers will be exposed to the punishment of Allah on that day.
The Day when mankind will stand before the Lord of the worlds?
[Al-Mutaffifin 83:6]
All people will stand up for the Lord of the Worlds, those in the east and west of the earth; they will be resurrected on a single plain where the Caller is heard by all and the sight reaches them. The Caller is heard by all of them because the earth is spread out; it is not spherical such that some people are hidden from others, but it is a single surface. If one person speaks at the beginning of the line, the last person hears him, and the sight reaches them; the one who looks sees them. This is unlike the world, where the earth is curved and spherical, but in the Hereafter, the earth is a single surface, as Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, said:
(3) And when the earth has been extended (4) And has cast out that within it and relinquished [it] وإذا الأرض مدت * وألقت ما فيها وتخلت
[Al-Inshiqaq 84:3-4]
It is spread out as a hide is spread out. On this great Day, people will stand before Allah (Mighty and Majestic) for the Reckoning and punishment. The duration of this Day is fifty thousand years. The sun will be a mile above them, and there will be no tree for them to take shade under, no building, and nothing else, except for those whom Allah shades in His shade on the Day when there is no shade except His. I ask Allah to make me and you among them. So, peace be upon him. On this great Day, these short-changers will find their punishment. In it, a child will be of no benefit, nor a father, nor a mother, nor a wife, nor anyone else.
For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him.
['Abasa 80:37]
Let these short-changers beware and fear Allah (Mighty and Majestic). They should fulfill the right in full, and if they add generosity, that is better. They are entitled to take their right in full, and if they are lenient, that is better. And success is from Allah.
