The Shaykh's response to the student's praise of him.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : I have nothing to say in the face of this praise, which I do not deserve. We are far below what the honorable professor Abu Malik says, by many stages. However, his good opinion of this poor servant, who is in need of his Lord's mercy, is what encourages and drives him to such fragrant praise, which I do not deserve.
The student : You deserve it.

The Shaykh : Therefore, on this occasion, I have nothing to do but follow the greatest man of our righteous predecessors after the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), namely Abu Bakr al-Siddiq. When he heard such fragrant praise from some of them, he would say, "O Allah, do not hold me accountable for what they say, forgive me for what they do not know, and make me better than what they think." This is all I can say on this occasion. "Actions are by intentions," and there is no doubt or ambiguity that the intention of our honorable professor Abu Malik is such that no bad opinion is ever formed of it. Although we do not desire such praise, because we know that it is slaughter, as he (peace be upon him) said, we fear for ourselves as we fear for others, completely. But as we said:
The reward of deeds depends upon the intentions and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended. إنَّما الأعمال بالنيات ، وإنما لكلِّ امرئ ما نوى
