The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
He (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “The Book of Praising Allah the Exalted and Being Grateful to Him. Allah the Exalted said:
So remember Me; I will remember you. And be grateful to Me and do not deny Me.
[Al-Baqarah 2:152]
And He the Exalted said:
If you are grateful, I will surely increase you
[Ibrahim 14:7]
And He the Exalted said:
And say, "Praise to Allah وقل الحمد لله
[Al-Isra 17:111]
And He the Exalted said:

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The author al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said in his book *Riyad al-Salihin*: “The Book of Praising Allah and Being Grateful to Him”. We have previously spoken about this, but we have not spoken about the first verse, which is His saying (Blessed and Exalted is He):
So remember Me; I will remember you. And be grateful to Me and do not deny Me.
[Al-Baqarah 2:152]
. Know that the remembrance of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) is the remembrance of the heart, whereas the remembrance of the tongue, devoid of the remembrance of the heart, is incomplete. This is indicated by the saying of Allah the Exalted:
and do not obey one whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance and who follows his desire
[Al-Kahf 18:28]
. He did not say, “He whose tongue We have silenced from Our remembrance.” He said:
one whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance
[Al-Kahf 18:28]
. So the beneficial remembrance is the remembrance of the heart. The remembrance of the heart occurs in everything; that is, it means that when a person is walking, sitting, or lying down, if he reflects on the verses of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), this is from the remembrance of Allah. Also from the remembrance of Allah is what the Sunnah brought, such as “There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner. To Him belongs the dominion and to Him belongs the praise, and He is over all things competent,” and “Glory be to Allah,” and the like. Also from the remembrance of Allah is prayer, for it is from the remembrance of Allah. Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) said:
Recite, [O Muhammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater
[Al-'Ankabut 29:45]
. Some of the scholars said the meaning is: “Because of the remembrance of Allah the Greatest contained therein”. In any case, a person should, when remembering Allah with his tongue, be remembering Allah with his heart, so that the heart and the tongue coincide and the benefit is realized. This is because mere remembrance with the tongue benefits the person, but it is incomplete; however, remembrance with the heart is the foundation and the important thing. Know that Allah the Exalted says:
Remember Me, I will remember you اذكروني اذكركم
. It is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that Allah said:
Whoever remembers Me to himself, I will remember him to Myself, and whoever remembers Me in a gathering, I will remember him in a gathering better than them
Sahih Ibn Hibban 6:21
. This means: if a person remembers Allah to himself and no one is around him, Allah will remember him to Himself; and if he remembers Allah in a gathering, meaning a group, Allah will remember him in a gathering better than them. This indicates the virtue of remembrance, that Allah the Exalted committed to the fact that whoever remembers Him to Himself, He will remember him to Himself, and whoever remembers Him in a gathering, He will remember him in a gathering better than it. He said:
And be grateful to Me and do not deny Me.
[Al-Baqarah 2:152]
. The meaning of gratitude and the meaning of ingratitude have been mentioned previously, and the rest of the discussion on this chapter will come, if Allah wills, in the coming hadiths.
