The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said in his book *Riyad al-Saliheen*: "The Book of Dhikr". *Adhkar* is the plural of *dhikr*, and what is meant by it is the remembrance of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). Then he mentioned the chapter on the virtue of dhikr and the exhortation to it, and he cited several verses. Know that the remembrance of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) is done with the heart, with the tongue, and with the limbs. As for the heart, it is reflection. Remembrance of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) with the heart is for a person to reflect on the names of Allah, His attributes, His rulings, His actions, and His signs. As for remembrance with the tongue, it is apparent, and it includes every utterance that brings one closer to Allah (Mighty and Majestic), such as *tahlil*, *tasbih*, *takbir*, reciting the Qur'an, enjoining good and forbidding evil, reading the Sunnah, and reading religious knowledge. Every utterance that brings one closer to Allah is a remembrance of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). As for actions, remembrance by actions with the limbs is every action that brings one closer to Allah, such as standing in prayer, bowing, prostrating, sitting, and so on. However, by custom, the term is used for the remembrance of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) through *tasbih*, *tahlil*, *takbir*, and *tahmid*. The author (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned verses regarding this, among which is the saying of Allah the Exalted:
(41) O you who have believed, remember Allah with much remembrance (42) And exalt Him morning and afternoon.
[Al-Ahzab 33:41-42]
. Allah addressed the believers and commanded them to remember Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) often, at all times, in all circumstances, and in all places: remember Allah often. And He said:
And exalt Him morning and afternoon.
[Al-Ahzab 33:42]
, meaning: Say *Subhan Allah* (Glory be to Allah) in the mornings and the evenings, meaning at the beginning of the day and the end of the day. It is also possible that it means throughout the day and throughout the night. And He said:
remember Allah much that you may be successful.
[Al-Anfal 8:45]
. This is mentioned by Allah (Mighty and Majestic) in the context of meeting the enemy, so He said:
O you who have believed, when you encounter a company [from the enemy forces], stand firm and remember Allah much that you may be successful.
[Al-Anfal 8:45]
. Thus, the remembrance of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) is among the causes of steadfastness and success. *Falah* (success) is a comprehensive term meaning the attainment of what is desired and safety from what is disliked. And Allah the Exalted said:
Recite, [O Muhammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater
[Al-'Ankabut 29:45]
. It was said that the meaning is: And what is in it of the remembrance of Allah is greater. It was also said that the meaning is: The remembrance of Allah in general is greater, and that when a person prays, that is a cause for the life of his heart and his frequent remembrance of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). And He said, describing the purest of His servants:
Indeed, the Muslim men and Muslim women, the believing men and believing women
[Al-Ahzab 33:35]
to His saying:
and the men who remember Allah often and the women who do so - for them Allah has prepared forgiveness and a great reward.
[Al-Ahzab 33:35]
. And He said:
So remember Me; I will remember you. And be grateful to Me and do not deny Me.
[Al-Baqarah 2:152]
. The verses on this matter are numerous, all indicating the virtue of dhikr and the exhortation to it. Allah the Exalted praised those who remember Allah standing, sitting, and lying on their sides, and He made it clear that they are the people of intellect, saying:
(190) Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding. (191) Who remember Allah while standing or sitting or [lying] on their sides and give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth, [saying], "Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly; exalted are You [above such a thing]; then protect us from the punishment of the Fire. إن في خلق السماوات والأرض واختلاف الليل والنهار لآيات لأولي الألباب * الذين يذكرون الله قيامًا وقعودًا وعلى جنوبهم ويتفكرون في خلق السماوات والأرض ربنا ما خلقت هذا باطلًا سبحانك فقنا عذاب النار
[Ali 'Imran 3:190-191]
. So the important thing is that we exhort ourselves and you to persist in the remembrance of Allah. It does not burden the tongue, and the tongue does not get tired or exhausted if it remains constantly saying *La ilaha illa Allah* (There is no god but Allah), *Subhan Allah* (Glory be to Allah), *Alhamdulillah* (Praise be to Allah), and *Allahu Akbar* (Allah is the Greatest); it does not get tired. It is easy, and praise be to Allah, and its reward is immense. May Allah make me and you among the men who remember Allah often and the women who remember [Him]. Indeed, He is Able to do all things.
