Explanation of Riyad al-Salihin-93b

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: The author (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned in the context of the hadiths in the chapter on the hadiths of the Dajjal and the signs of the Hour, among other things:
"From Abu Thalhah al-Khushni (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), who said:
Allah, the Exalted, has laid down certain duties which you should not neglect, and has put certain limits which you should not transgress, and has kept silent about other matters out of mercy for you and not out of forgetfulness, so do not seek to investigate them.
Riyad as-Salihin 1832
This is a good hadith, narrated by al-Daraqutni and others.
And from Abdullah ibn Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said:
We went on seven expeditions with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and we ate locusts.
Bulugh al-Maram 12:4
.
In another narration:
We ate locusts with him
Agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim.
And from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The believer should not be stung from the same hole twice.
Sunan Ibn Majah 3982Sahih (Darussalam)
Agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim"
.

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
These hadiths are among the scattered miscellaneous hadiths that al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned at the end of his book *Riyad al-Salihin*:
From Abu Thalhah al-Khushni (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Indeed, Allah has prescribed obligations, so do not neglect them; He has set limits, so do not transgress them; and He has been silent about certain matters out of mercy for you, so do not inquire into them.
: These are three matters that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned, along with their rulings:
First: Allah has made obligatory certain duties, and the greatest of Allah’s duties upon His servants is tawhid (the oneness of Allah), the testimony that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.
In the testimony that there is no god but Allah lies the tawhid of Allah in worship, and that no one is to be worshipped but Him.
And in the testimony that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah lies the tawhid of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in following, such that no one is to be followed but him. These are the most obligatory of the duties.
Then the prayers, zakah, fasting, Hajj, dutifulness to parents, maintaining family ties, good neighborliness, truthfulness, and advice; many things that Allah the Exalted has made obligatory upon His servants.
Among them are individual obligations upon every person.
And among them are collective obligations; if enough people perform them, the obligation falls off the rest.
So the five daily prayers are an individual obligation; it is necessary for every Muslim to perform them. And the funeral prayer is a collective obligation; if enough people perform it, the obligation falls off the rest.
and has put certain limits which you should not transgress
Riyad as-Salihin 1832
: Regarding the duties, he said: Do not neglect them, but strive for them and perform them in the required manner.
and has put certain limits which you should not transgress
Riyad as-Salihin 1832
: He set limits for certain things: meaning He established a specific limit for them. For example, the five daily prayers have a limit: their times. The time for the midday prayer is from the sun’s zenith until the shadow of every object becomes equal to its length after the zenith. The time for the afternoon prayer is from that time until the sun sets, with the preferred time being until the sun turns yellow. The time for the sunset prayer is from the sun’s setting until the red twilight disappears. The time for the night prayer is from the disappearance of the red twilight until the middle of the night. The time for the dawn prayer is from the appearance of dawn until the sun rises. These are the limits.
Fasting has a limit from the appearance of dawn until the sun sets.
Hajj has a limit:
Hajj is [during] well-known months
[Al-Baqarah 2:197]
in specific places, and so on.
and has put certain limits which you should not transgress
Riyad as-Salihin 1832
: Do not transgress them. Allah the Mighty and Majestic said:
And whoever transgresses the limits of Allah has certainly wronged himself
[At-Talaq 65:1]
,
And whoever transgresses the limits of Allah - it is those who are the wrongdoers.
[Al-Baqarah 2:229]
.
Abu Tha'labah Al-Khushani (May Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Allah, the Exalted, has laid down certain duties which you should not neglect, and has put certain limits which you should not transgress, and has kept silent about other matters out of mercy for you and not out of forgetfulness, so do not seek to investigate them."
Riyad as-Salihin 1832
: He was silent about certain things, not making them obligatory upon us and not forbidding them. Had He willed, He would have made obligatory whatever He willed and forbidden whatever He willed, but He was silent about certain things; had it not been for His mercy, He would have obligated them upon us. I give you an example with the five daily prayers:
The five daily prayers were first made obligatory by Allah upon the servants as fifty prayers. They were fifty prayers, with a person praying fifty times a day and night. Then Allah the Exalted forgave and reduced them to five in action and fifty in the scale. And many things Allah has forgiven; had He willed, He would have obligated them upon us.
And in His saying:
And He was silent about things
: this is evidence for what the people of the Sunnah and the community hold, that Allah speaks with a heard voice, because silence is the opposite of speech, the opposite of speech with a heard voice. And He, (Exalted and Majestic is He), speaks as He wills, when He wills, how He wills. We do not know how He speaks, nor when He speaks, nor with what He speaks, but we believe that: when He wills something, He says to it "Be," and it is. Whenever He wills something, whatever He wills, He says to it: "Be," and it is. For this reason, the words of Allah the Exalted cannot be counted. Allah the Exalted said:
And if whatever trees upon the earth were pens
[Luqman 31:27]
and the sea [was ink], replenished thereafter by seven [more] seas, the words of Allah would not be exhausted
[Luqman 31:27]
, and He the Exalted said:
Say, "If the sea were ink for [writing] the words of my Lord, the sea would be exhausted before the words of my Lord were exhausted, even if We brought the like of it as a supplement."
[Al-Kahf 18:109]
.
Then he mentioned the hadith of Abdullah ibn Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
I fought in nine Ghazwa-t along with the Prophet
Sahih al-Bukhari 4272
: Locusts are a known creature, and they are lawful. It is lawful for a person to eat them alive or dead. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Two types of dead animals and two types of bloods have been made lawful for us, the two types of dead animals are locusts and fish (seafood)
Bulugh al-Maram 13
, and for this reason, locusts do not require ritual slaughter; they are eaten alive or dead.
And it is game, so if it is in Makkah, it is forbidden for a person to hunt it, and it is forbidden for him to drive it from its place. Locusts swarmed in Makkah last year in Ramadan, and the children were picking them up from the sacred precinct and its surroundings. This is forbidden and not permissible. It is obligatory for whoever sees a child picking them up to prevent him and forbid him, because it is respected game. It is not permissible to hunt it in Makkah, nor is it permissible to drive it intentionally. But if it flies and you are passing by, there is no sin on you for that. But if you go to drive it, that is not permissible. Neither this, nor the locust, nor the pigeon, nor any other game.
And in this is evidence that the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) use the approval of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) as proof: meaning if they did something and he approved them, it is lawful, and it is so. Because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) could have said, "Do not do this," but if he was silent, that indicates its permissibility.
As for the hadith of Abu Hurayrah, which is the third: the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The believer should not be stung from the same hole twice.
Sunan Ibn Majah 3982Sahih (Darussalam)
: The sting is the sting of a snake. The believer is shrewd and astute, astute and cautious, not stung twice from the same hole. Meaning: if something happens to him through any action, he will not return to it. Why? Because he is decisive. He cannot cut himself a second time. Rather, if he is stung from a hole, he leaves it and knows that there is no benefit in it. So the believer is not stung twice from the same hole, because he is what? Decisive, astute, shrewd; he cannot be cheated or deceived. This indicates that a person should be astute and not return to something that caused him harm. Rather, he should be a believer, because this is part of the perfection of faith. And Allah is the One who grants success.
The student: What remains is:
Abu Tha'labah Al-Khushani (May Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Allah, the Exalted, has laid down certain duties which you should not neglect, and has put certain limits which you should not transgress, and has kept silent about other matters out of mercy for you and not out of forgetfulness, so do not seek to investigate them."
Riyad as-Salihin 1832
?
Yes, He forbade certain things, so do not violate them. Yes, He forbade certain things, so do not violate them, meaning do not violate what Allah the Exalted has forbidden, just as you do not neglect what Allah has made obligatory. Yes.
