The Shaykh : Then we move on to tonight's lesson, which is: the statement of Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both): Bulugh al-Maram 8:68 : His saying: Sahih al-Bukhari 5936 : means: he invoked a curse upon her, and this does not mean cursing her in the sense of verbal abuse, as it appears; that is, abusing her, no, rather its meaning is that he invoked the curse of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) upon her.
And his saying: means: the one who joins women's hair.
: the one who asks for someone to join her hair, so the one who joins hair is the doer, and the one who has her hair joined is the one upon whom it is done, and the one who tattoos is likewise, : the one who asks for someone to tattoo her.
Now, who is the one who joins hair?
The one who joins hair is the one who joins her hair with other hair to lengthen the hair of the head, and people in the pre-Islamic age of ignorance and in Islam as well considered the length of a woman's hair to be one of her beauties and something that makes her desirable, so a woman would strive to have long hair and boast to other women about the length of her hair, so if her hair was short, she would go to have it joined with hair, hair that is suitable for human hair, so that whoever sees her would think her to be... answer me?
The student: Having hair.
The Shaykh : Long-haired, he thinks her to be long-haired.
And his saying: : its apparent meaning is that it is the one who joined her hair with anything, whether it be hair or something other than hair, but some scholars hold that the one who joined it with something other than hair is not included in this hadith, meaning if she joined it with rags or synthetic hair, it is not included in this hadith, but we will come to the detail of this issue, if Allah wills, when deriving the benefits.
: Tattooing is when a woman pierces her skin with a needle until blood emerges, then she fills this place with kohl or something similar, so if she does that and the skin heals over it, this dye remains permanently because it is under the skin, so water does not affect it, and women differ in their tattooing, some have it done in the shape of a palm tree, or in the shape of a lion, or in the shape of a human, or in the shape of a tattoo, meaning embroidery, the point is that they differ, and the hadith is general, meaning any tattoo.
And his saying: is the one who asks for someone to tattoo her, so she does this.
And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed these two women because they attempted to oppose Allah in His divine decree, where they wanted to perfect themselves:
The first perfects the hair, and the second perfects the skin with these engravings, so each of them deserved the curse, which is expulsion and distance from the mercy of Allah.
The Prophet (ﷺ) cursed the woman who joins false hair to her real hair [extensions] and the one who asks for it to be done to her; and the woman who tattoos (others) and the one who has it done (for her).
