No expiation is required of you if you did not swear an oath

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: I am a young man who made a covenant with Allah to read a certain number of pages from Ibn Kathir’s concise tafsir every day, but I did not fulfill this covenant. I had set a specific time period for this, and it has now ended. What is obligatory for me?

A: You must strive to do so. If there is a lapse on some days, you must repent to Allah for that. There is no expiation required of you if you did not swear an oath. However, if this covenant was made using the wording of an oath, such as "By Allah," "By the life of Allah," or "By Allah," then you must pay the expiation for an oath, based on the saying of Allah the Exalted in Surat al-Ma'idah:
Allah will not impose blame upon you for what is meaningless in your oaths, but He will impose blame upon you for [breaking] what you intended of oaths. So its expiation is the feeding of ten needy people from the average of that which you feed your [own] families or clothing them or the freeing of a slave. But whoever cannot find [or afford it] - then a fast of three days [is required]. That is the expiation for oaths when you have sworn. But guard your oaths. Thus does Allah make clear to you His verses that you may be grateful.
[al-Ma'idah: 89].
