Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: What is the ruling on letting garments hang below the ankles without stubbornness or arrogance? And is it permissible for a man to wear silk in certain places?
A: Letting garments hang below the ankles for a man is not permissible, even if he does not intend arrogance; because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) warned against it. He said in the authentic hadith:Sunan Abi Dawud 4087Sahih (Al-Albani) narrated by Muslim. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1731Sahih (Darussalam) These two hadiths clarify that it is not permissible for a man to let his garments hang below the ankles, and that doing so with arrogance is a greater sin and a more serious crime. Rather, letting garments hang is for women, because their feet are part of their private parts.
It is obligatory for a man to avoid letting his garments hang below the ankles entirely, and his garments should not go below his ankles, as mentioned above, and because of his (peace and blessings be upon him) saying:Sunan an-Nasa'i 5331Sahih (Darussalam) narrated by al-Bukhari in his Sahih. This applies to the man. As for the woman, there is no harm in letting her garments hang below the ankles, as mentioned above.
As for silk, it is not permissible for men to wear it; rather, it is permissible for women, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sunan an-Nasa'i 5148Sahih (Darussalam) However, if it is for medical treatment, such as an itch or the like, there is no harm for a man to wear it; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) granted a dispensation to al-Zubayr and Talhah to wear silk due to an itch they had, and this is in the category of treatment and medicine. It is also permissible for a man to wear silk to the extent of two, three, or four fingers, as the authentic Sunnah has established this.

Narrated Abu Dharr: The Prophet (ﷺ) as saying: There are three to whom Allah will not speak and at whom He will not look on the Day of Resurrection, and whom He will not declare pure, and they will have a painful punishment. I asked: Who are they, Messenger of Allah, they are losers and disappointed ? He repeated it three times. I asked: Who are they. Messenger of Allah, they are losers and disappointed ? He replied: The one who wears a trailing robe, the one who takes account of what he gives, and the one who produces a ready sale of a commodity by false swearing.
ثلاثة لا يكلمهم الله ولا ينظر إليهم يوم القيامة ولا يزكيهم ولهم عذاب أليم: المسبل إزاره، والمنان فيما أعطى، والمنفق سلعته بالحلف الكاذبWhoever arrogantly drags his garment, Allah will not look at him on the Day of Judgement.
من جر ثوبه خيلاء لم ينظر الله إليه يوم القيامةIt is obligatory for a man to avoid letting his garments hang below the ankles entirely, and his garments should not go below his ankles, as mentioned above, and because of his (peace and blessings be upon him) saying:
Whatever of the Izar comes below the ankles is in the Fire.
ما أسفل من الكعبين من الإزار فهو في النارAs for silk, it is not permissible for men to wear it; rather, it is permissible for women, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Gold and silk have been permitted for the females of my Ummah, and forbidden to the males.
